Anything can be prog if you believe hard enough.

There is some "art rock" stuff on a few albums like Ideal Copy, Bell is a Cup, Its Beginning to and Back Again. Also Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, and Bruce Gilbert have done proggy and avant-garde material.

I'd like to think so.

Floyd with Syd was never prog though.

I love Wire and have quite a few album of theirs. Experimental post-punk fits just fine to me.

Why does everyone want everything to be prog? It really died out in the mid to late seventies.

It's a balancing act. Not so long ago nobody wanted anything to be prog. Now it's a pop trend.

They were the last great band to sign to EMI's "progressive" imprint Harvest but they are pretty much the definition of post punk art rock.
What?

I've seen Wire and heard their first three albums - they are an interesting band - the word prog never crossed my mind but they are a rewarding listen

Weren't the band Gang of Four similar? Didn't they have proggy elements too for a punk band? And also some early PIL? I guess it's time for me to go to youtube. Lol. I have heard Wire had some proggy elements though. One band I actually do have a couple of cds by is Pere Ubu. I'd say they were very experimental for a punk/proto punk band.

You called them "post punk", so that is what they are.......

Prog died in the mid 70's, it was taken over by disco.

Almost, but not quite.  To use the site's own terminology, I'd call Wire Prog Related.  Certainly art-rock and certainly wonderful.  I can have an unrealistically broad definition of prog, so I decided to adhere to the progarchives taxonomy.  I have the same issue with SF.  Writer and editor Damon Knight (To Serve Man) once said:  "Science Fiction is whatever I'm pointing at when I say 'Science Fiction'."
