Another band that I've come to overlook, and I'm not sure whether this band falls under the progressive spectrum. Particularly interested about this one.

We all have different ideas of what is and what is not progressive... but that's what makes these polls fun to me. Some will argue that the nature of the band doesn't matter, while others will argue that their opinions make the most sense. And though I can sometimes relate to those points being made, they don't do much for the overall conversation.

If this poll can guarantee itself the attention that other similar polls have been getting, we can get at some personal approaches to the matter. Those are the most fun to read, and they're the best for the poll.

lol... don't be surprised if one runs afoul of the admin team. The site could be falling down around us... oh yeah.. it is..but they'll still be on teh beat and making sure no one gets their panties in a twist seeing a poll in the prog section regarding a band not deemed... prog hahah

anyhow...  have and listened to Junta... good album... never really inspired to go deeper with them

so mark me as Phishnostic..

I love Phish - was fortunate that when I was in college they were beginning their ascendancy - bought Junta on cassette at a show in 1990 - until 1994 I bought every album as soon as I could, saw them live many times, had a bunch of tapes - lost faith in them around '95, but have gotten back into them the past 10 years or so.

I understand that it doesn't make sense to brand them "prog" and yet they have prog elements such as composed instrumental sections, odd times, virtuosity, non-standard lyrics sometimes extending to the absurd but often suggesting another world (isn't that pretty prog?) - plus there is the whole Gamehenge song-cycle. These prog aspects were definitely a big part of their appeal for me, since I spent my high school years listening to Rush, Yes, ELP, Genesis, etc. Phish were "my" band, I could see them in pretty small places and watch them thrive and grow, and hunting down recordings helped one get deeper into the world they had created/were creating.

It took me a while to get into and understand their music, but I would definitely consider them under the prog umbrella. Quite inventive music, and very well performed.

Are they some american thing?  Like Kansas or whatever?  At least I've heard of Kansas, and once even tried a few songs (dreary, as expected)

Kansas is awesome, but yeah, Phish is an American band.

So is Zappa by the way... And the Grateful Dead... And Styx...

I agree about Kanas not my thing---Kansas is an American band trying to be prog----Phish is an interesting band more in the Grateful Dead world --but better.

It's the improvisation that does it. Once you figure that out and start listening to their live stuff, it just clicks. It clicked a few days ago for me, and now I'm addicted to the point of mercy. I'm even trying to play some of their stuff for myself already.

Phish is probably in the top three of my favorite all-time bands -- I have yet to hear something from them I truly hate. The day I collect all of their albums will be a day where I'm truly happy. Thumbs Up

Anything even remotely associated with The Grateful Dead is something I just can't get my head around. When I first heard about their prog roots, I listened to Junta but it didn't do much for me.

Not saying there's no talent, I just can't get into the results of that talent.

Not a fan. Dead wannabes. Hours of nonstop jamming. Lots of hippies dancing around under an hallucinogenic fog. Mind-numbing, indeed.

Woah, that's harsh. One of my friends is a big fan, and he has been to some of their concerts.

His reason for liking them is their awesome chord shapes, progressions, and in general, just their guitar jamming. Not a hippy, a skilled musician who loves their skilled playing.

Right. Like I said, I get that they're talented. I just can't get into the end result.

Well your reason is valid. You don't like the way it sounds.

He said that all of their fans were hippies and that they were dead wannabes. That, my friend, is ridiculous...
