I discovered prog through IQ, so obviously I tried Marillion too, as they are often compared to one another. Sadly, Marillion generally leave me flat. There are song good tracks, and some good moments, but it's generally a bit "meh" for me. I've only tried the first 5 albums, and not been prepared to try the more recent stuff - possibly to my detriment, who knows? Pendragon do many things quite well, but none brilliantly. I own a few of their albums and I enjoy them, but there is a lack of killer tracks that keep me coming back. They generally get played in a prog shuffle - I just don't dig them enough to play a whole album in one go. And that says a lot. So IQ are the clear winner here. Everything since Ever has been very good and very consistent, and I love that keys and guitar get more or less an equal share of the spotlight.

IQ. Was leaning towards Marillion, but not sure they're as "proggy" as IQ still sounds, IMHO.

Even though TFTLA and Ever are good albums, their output after the year 2000 is really, really solid and puts Marillion (a much bigger band) to shame. One band lives on past glories, the other one keeps getting better. (IMO, of course)

Maybe not that big, but well-liked for sure.
I still like the output from Marillion - but it really isn't anything special.

I’m not a huge fan of the Neo-Prog style, but IQ gets my vote here. I used to enjoy Marillion, especially their albums with Fish, but have grown rather tired of them and they just aren’t doing anything musically interesting anymore. I pretty much walked away from the band after Fish left anyway, but Peter Nicholls is such a better vocalist than Fish and he’s much more easy on the ears and isn’t grating like Fish has a tendency of being. Don’t get me started on nasally, comatose Steve Hogarth.

I've never understood the term "neo" when referring to a modern, popular genre. Prog is only like 50 years old, why neo? it's still a really new genre of music

Probably because there were so many of the old-timers that ditched their progressive roots in favor of pop music: Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, among others that ‘Neo’ helped launch not only a new movement, but perhaps the term was also used to distance themselves from the 70s bands.

I also think the Neo prog tag is silly to some degree......to me most of them sound like either eclectic or symph prog to me. At any rate I like IQ and imho Dark Matter, Frequency, and Road of Bones (and the early ones are great also) are excellent albums and deserve to be in anyone's prog rock collection.

Despite the utterly immense Marillion RAH gig on Friday, it has to be IQ

Hmmm....Marillion back in the 80s had the edge over IQ - but have to vote IQ now, since Marillion have moved far away from Neo-prog, whilst IQ very much still define it. Learning to like the latest Marillion music more recently, but Neo-prog it ain't!

IQ. If I was asked this question in 1990 I would have answered Marillion, but they just keep getting older where IQ just keeps getting better
