Counterparts by a wide margin. Not really a big fan of the last few albums . Something about the production I think. In the past rush could sound very heavy but there was always clean separation
of all the instruments. The last few sound very muddy to me. Not sure what really what it is . |

Yeah, I missed the 'light and shade' in their music. On pre Presto albums the songs seemed to individually stand out, after that period, the songs seemed to blur into one for me. |

I don’t like Rush’s music from the 90s, but if I was cornered, I’d say Counterparts is a my favorite overall and I’m not even really a fan of this album. I miss the synthesizers.

Love Clockwork Angels and Snakes & Arrows.
Like others I had stopped listening to their new stuff at some point (probably after Power Windows). Then I happened to hear Far Cry on the radio (imagine that) and was sold once again.

Counterparts is my fave from that list. Presto and Roll the Bones are ok.
I didn't like anything they released after Counterparts. |

What? they sopped using synths? From this list, nothing really. Saw them live a few times during this period but I guess i would go with Vapor Trails. Heavier sound.

CLOCKWORK ANGELS
For both the album and the book, I fell in love with both when I heard it back then. Best album since Moving Pictures in my opinion, which in itself was their best since Hemispheres!

After the disappointing Presto and the poor Roll the Bones, I felt finished with Rush. I have heard snippets of some albums between RtB and Clockwork Angels, but CA was their return to form, their best work since Signals.

All great albums, all Gold or Platinum sales in US or Canada.
Vapor Trails: Brutal, raw and hard edged Counterparts: Hard drums and guitar S&A: Heavy drums and great song writing Good hard kick-a$$ music.

Since "None Of The Above" wasn't an option, I went for Clockworks Angels. Decent enough record.

Counterparts. Cohesive, strong, quality atmos; great return to form. Interesting lyrical stances which seemed to upset certain fans.
Vapor Trails is the only Rush album I've yet to purchase. There was so much quality and informed debate about the production standard that I decided to wait. Heard some tracks on live albums, bootlegs, DVDs and at an R30 concert. Test For Echo... Rush go grunge to remain relevant to the kids.... yerk. I only ever heard 2 grunge albums I thought were any good and Rush downgrading their sound to that appalling guitar sound and style was not a good fit. Presto... ok but an album they should have kept under their hat for a while. Roll The Bones ... I enjoyed it but it is probably is not the best. Snakes and Arrows was, is a fine album. Very together material wise. Clockwork Angels. Now for some ungodly reason I cannot fathom this; worse I haven't the time or motivation. What is it about. Concepts can be complex but clear. It's probably good but it seems hard to care... Nice Rush type playing (they've a set sound for the past 30 years and ain't going to change. |
