I adore Awaken, but something about the composition always felt a little stiff to me. There are standout moments but the song seems to lose something during some of its transitions. Rather than flowing and building upon itself intuitively, it meanders, leaving me with a sort of disconnected impression, like it's only a half told story. Wobbly perhaps. Asymmetrical.
On the other hand, Close to the Edge is a refined, precision work of art. Greater texture, variety, breadth, coherence of structure and ambition, all culminating in one of the most satisfying endings.

I would agree that Awaken was the last, great Yes song. It is very hard to choose between the two: in term of personnel one difference boils down to Bruford vs. White - and I am not sure that White ever topped this performance again...

Awaken by light years. Yesīmost spiritual tune. CttE is just way too ponderous musically and the singer fails manage to convince me.

Close to the Edge. I love the album from start to finish and back again.

CTTE was Bruford's swan song with the group which does make it that much more special. I prefer Awaken though because it seemed to be from the right album at the right time. Great production values, a good mix of songs, and dig that pipe organ. White did indeed shine on Awaken, but I think it was edged out by his kinetic performance on Yesshows' Gates of Delirium.

^ I agree (especially that organ) - and White was superb on 'Gates' (live and studio)
