We all love 'em, but decent ones are getting rarer than hens teeth. Name me a quality, genuine epic, (over, say 15 minutes and not just a string of songs) that's been produced in the last 10 years. Nothing neo, metal or Steven Wilson please.

Doesn't get any more epic than Godspeed. 2012:

"Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar."

Hi,

Can't say I have heard a lot of them, that's for sure.

But, I believe this might be more "time/era sensitive" than otherwise ... in the late 60's and early 70's it was quite OK to experiment and expand themes and have long pieces in the middle, that were not just another song, but a part of the symphonic/classic style of composition, even if something was totally free form, and just plain experimental, or in the case of early CAN, simply pieces of tape glued together!

Today, I think that we're looking for too much justification, and "meaning" as to what something is supposed to be, rather than you and I trying to relate to it ourselves, and I think that social think tank, prevents people from creating longer pieces of music, knowing that the majority of folks don't like it, and simply call it "filler", as has been the case many times here.

It's really hard to feel a Beethoven, Mozart, Bach or any composer, even in rock music, as just creating "filler" ... and between you and I, even if I were a musician, I am not sure I would want to withstand the bombardment of crass and rude remarks ... maybe it was more possible in a time, when the media DID NOT dominate the landscape, but until such a time as we are not "controlled", or "influenced" by any media, I am not sure that these pieces can develop in an extremely satisfying way, as has been the case for a very long time.

But there will ALWAYS be something out there ... whether we find it, or hear it, is another matter altogether!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

It may be a bit too prog-by-numbers, and I'm not saying this is my favourite epic length track of the last ten years, but somehow I think this track works well for such a query. My favourites I can think of are instrumentals, but this Ga'an feels more "epic" to me, and is rather more mainstream than really experimental choices I might go for. I don't consider it to be great, but pretty enjoyable.

Ga'an - Call Of The Black Equus

Id also mention Guapo's "King Lindorm", Electric Orange's "Behind the Wall of Sheep", Universal Totem Orchestra's "De Astrologia" and Ut Gret's "Infinite Regress".

Actually, if a track that is something of a rehash works, then I'd go with Magma's Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré II. And if Comus had done a studio re-work of The "Maalgard Suite" on Out of the Coma, that would be my favourite.

That Ga'an track is great! But all their albums are excellent, if you like Zeuhl. Also de UTO one. A band capable only of masterpieces. I still have to buy their new one.

What makes for a quality, genuine epic in your book?  What are your criteria?
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

Guapo's last album Obscure Knowledge is basically an album-length epic.

I'm not sure how to identify something Neo-sounding... at least if it's not one of the Neo bands from the 80's... out of that time-zone, I'm not really sure what makes something Neo. However, there's Cast, with the songs "Frente al Umbral" (2008) and "El Puente" (2013). I guess "Gaza", from Marillion, is good enough for me too, though I don't know if they would still be considered Neo. Then, though I prefer to break it in songs, there's the whole "Whirlwind" album by Transatlantic (still not sure if it would be considered Neo, but I do love that one). And indeed Olfield's new "Return to Ommadawn" is wonderful, specially side one. And last, well, I just have to mention it, though you said no metal, however Iron Maiden's last "Empire of the Clouds" is really excellent, one of the most inspired and memorable songs from the last years.

Oh yeah, and just as with The Whirlwind, Edison's Children "The Final Breath Before November", after the third song, all the rest of the songs flow as one, and that one is also great.
