I find it interesting when two musicians/songwriters come
together in a duo/leadership partnership resulting in a sum greater than the
individual parts, and a special musical magic occurs that the individuals can’t
quite measure up to, when it comes to their solo work. (Not to slight their solo work, which may indeed be
excellent on its own. But you get the
idea.) I’m thinking of certain specific examples, such as: John Lennon & Paul McCartney Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel Alan Parsons & Eric Woolfson Roger Waters & David Gilmour Elton John & Bernie Taupin Edgar Froese & Chris Franke Walter Becker & Donald Fagen I feel like the above examples are good ones to illustrate
the principle of the chemistry. I’m sure
there are others. Any comments or
additions to the list? Oh, during the Captcha battle, I thought of one more –
Bruford & Levin. I feel like when
these two guys are together, it’s magic. |

Yeah, often enough they need the input, help, bringing down to Earth... or elevating ones compositions to make them from average or good to masterpieces. I particularly feel it with Pink Floyd... even though at their best times, it was not only Waters/Gilmour, but at least Wright too (I don't think Mason really did much in that aspect). Even in songs without shared credits, it can become evident that the arrangements on guitars and keyboards made by Gilmour and Wright helped to make the songs better. And by listening to Waters solo output, I'm sure he would have made much better albums if Gilmour had been there to put his touch or speak his mind... even if Waters disliked loosing control over his songs (it should work out the other way around too, I guess).

From the good duos on the opening post I'd highlight "Elton John & Bernie Taupin" , definitely a no-brainer.
But while the list is too long ... from my part just a couple thrown ;) Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, btw featuring Sandy Denny's voice on 'The Battle of Evermore' was really a great Plant's idea .... turned it unlike any other; Tony Iommi & Ronnie James Dio - unique riffs & unique vocals on the heavy rock world. From prog rock I used to enjoy the "John Tout & Annie Haslam" duo everytime I spun something classic from their band. Edited by Tillerman88 - September 21 2017 at 01:29 |

Jagger and Richards or Jagger and Taylor.
Vastly prefer them over The Beatles. |

Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother
Actually one of the best examples I can think of. A great meeting of likeminded spirits. |

Roger Hodgson & Rick Davies did some pretty cool stuff together.
A rather obscure one but IMHO Steve Clayton & Jim Milne of Tractor never got enough credit for their intricate psych/folk arrangements and thoughtful lyrics back in the early 70s.
