Goblin. All they had to do was hear the title theme from Suspiria.

(Okay, they're not "mainstream" in the US, but they did provide the music for Dawn of the Dead, which is a rather famous film.)

Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

^ Nah - INCLUDING Pink Floyd
I recall a work colleague of mine at the time sat in my car for a chat, I had a live version of Set The Controls.......(I had taped the Ohm Suite Ohm boot) and he commented “ What is this sh*t - Satan music ? “

As I recall, a co-worker once called the Yes I was listening to "weird ass" music.  And that was just Time and a Word.

Somebody at a music appreciation group asked where King Crimson came from
When I told him Bournemouth he said, "Bournemouth then?"

My elder child called me the other day asking which album  I used to play when she was a little girl that terrified her with the sound of an helicopter and screaming because she wanted to replay it now kind of to reconnect with that childhood moments, isn't that a bit awkward?
It happens to be Dark Side in case you didn't guess (and I usually went running to the player and skipped that part, don't get me wrong)

LOL  Funny.  What I meant is the guy in the street often knows the PF of DSOTM and later, when the beast was rather a lot tamer.

everything is "bizarre" for those who only listen to what the mainstream offers them.

Is any prog band 'mainstream' by the public's definition...?
I suppose to my family and friends King Crimson would be one of the bizarre ones.

One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Just mentioning the name "Van Der Graaf Generator" makes (most) people smile with ... let's say - pitty ?
