Topic: Prog for Studying Posted: October 24 2017 at 01:05 |
Greetings my friends
I am new to this forum, but I have been reading it since 2010. It took me a while I suppose. For those of you who are students or former students what prog or albums do you like to listen to while studying? For instance The Snow Goose works pretty well for me.

I'd probably suggest no music at all if you're studying.

I listen to all sorts of music while studying!
I'd recommend A Trick Of The Tail (Genesis), Heavy Weather (Weather Report), and Planet Drum (Mickey Hart); but those are just great albums!

If you can't bear not listening to anything while studying, I recommend the largely instrumental "Third".

Wow. There's prog fans still in school? Or maybe some of you just study for the pure enjoyment of it.

I think there's nothing more productive than Progressive Electronic. You can pick pretty much everything of the genre but Cosmic Ground III is a favourite with its constant fast sequencing.

I do tend to find that if I am studying or reading generally these days, i prefer to do it in silence but anything constructive, creative or indulgent has to be backed with a varied and uplifting soundtrack!

If you like electronic music (progressive or ambient), you can't go wrong with Vangelis' Soil Festivities or Tangerine Dream's Rubycon.

Ommadawn | I agree with Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield and even his Incantations album, which while not his best, tends to flow over you without affecting studies too much. Have you listened to Rob Reed's homages to early Oldfield - Sanctuary 1 and 2? Very good. Early Tangerine Dream is always good - Ricochet, for example. More up to date, I really like Steve Rothery's solo album - The Ghosts of Pripyat to chill out to.

I never listened to music while studying (or just reading, either)... it would distract me and I wouldn't pay attention to either. However, at a few times I found myself trying to study while neighbours had music on, I had to end up puting Enya to mask the noise I think... I didn't even know Prog back then... or at least not so well. In general, I guess ambient electronic would have worked just as fine. Or classical. However, while doing homework, I did love to put music. Math and similar subjects were perfect to do while listening to music.

I would think ambient, jazz or classical would be good. Anything that is good as background music would probably be good.

despite what I said earlier, those two lps are excellent for reading or generally contemplating to.. I wrote a post ages ago saying how I used to read Michael Moorcock 'Elric' books whilst listening to 'Rubicon' on headphones when I was 14..
And Soil Festivities particularly the first side (first and second movement)is the the best music to make love to, particularly in a thunderstorm...

I mostly like
instrumental when I study as I found lyrics to distracting if I like the song!
Mike Oldfield
(Ommadawn or Amarok).
Dellinger, I do too some time listen to Enya to mask my neighbors’ noise! I was
also using Enya in mid-90's in high school to cover my family's noise... Now
that I went back to university, my old CD is back to work!
I also enjoy Sanctus, by the new band CIRKUS for the last review before midterm
exam and I'm little stressed out. Link to the full album: http://cirkus.bandcamp.com/album/wild-dogs

I am used to listening to music while studying and that's why silence feels unnatural to me. But I use silence only when I really can't understand what I am reading.
I am gonna try Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream.
AFlowerKingCrimson, I am currently working on my MSc Thesis so I am not in high school anymore. But when I was in high school back at 2009, I was studying while listening to classic prog rock stuff ( Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull etc) .
Also check out The Pearl by Brian Eno and Harold Budd.
Please suggest more albums if you can. You guys are awesome.
