Topic: Recommend me modern bands similar to... Posted: October 29 2017 at 13:19 |
Hey everyone. I am new to progarchives forums.
I am looking for new bands similar to those I like the most, could you suggest me some?
The genres I like the most are prog/symphonic rock/metal. I do like creative songs and I prefer bands with keyboardist. I don't like grunts/growl.
My favourite bands I absolutely love are: Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation (pre Road Salt), Symphony X, Anathema, IQ, Anubis, Haken, Phideaux, Riverside, Ayreon, Epica, The Mars Volta (first 2 albums)
I also love some Yes and Genesis albums, but this time I am looking for modern bands active mostly in '90-now.
Thanks a lot!

Try Anekdoten and see if they suit your taste - I can't praise enough the last album (but they've been around quite a while and all releases have very strong tracks)

Hey. Thank you for suggestion. I listen to Anekdoten and I like them quite a bit, but they are not my favourite. I find the character of their songs very specific: dark and depressing. "Here" ballad is amazing :) I am mostly seeking for some more complex harmonics in the songs which involve synthesizers. Good examples would be Haken - Celestial Elixir, IQ - Without Walls, Anubis - Disinfected and Abused, Symphony X - Through the Looking Glass, Dream Theater - Learning to Live etc. Looking forward for more suggestions :)

I guess you should check out Devin Townsend. He does use growling, but just like you, I do dislike Grunting very much. However, even though in some songs I can tolerate it given how great such songs may be, with Townsend I actually enjoy the grunting... he sort of gives it purpose and really fits the songs. And he's not all about grunting either. He is actually rather versatile with his singing. I started with Terria and the live Retinal Circus to have a good overview of his career, and I guess that's a very good way to do it... though I still have to get many albums from him that seem interesting. I guess some Opeth might come in good too... I mostly have my collection of not grunting songs from them, and they do have some really great ones. Going into a more Epica like direction, I like Therion very much too (specially Secret of the Runes), Nightwish, Rhapsody (of Fire), and a bit of Within Temptation (mostly Mother Earth).

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely check out all the recommended bands.
I listened to the Arena and Spock's Beard some time ago and these are the great bands for sure, but I don't know yet if I will like them as much as I liked the other bands. I like Opeth, but not the albums where growling was used (Pale Communion is probably my favourite right now, very progressive) I also tried to Devin Townsend in the past, but at first listen I felt it's not what I am looking for. I found their music to have too much electronics for my taste. But I will give them a try again :)

If you like the current Opeth, you should definately cjeck out Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson (if you haven't already). Also check out Marillion (Brave, Marbles and Seasons End are good places to start), the later albums by Mastodon (begin with Crack the skye) and Tool. Three modern prog bands with very differemt style

| If you do like non growling Opeth, I can give you my list of non-growling songs that I like from their growling albums: Epilogue, Face of Melinda, Harvest, A fair Judgment, Atonement, Coil, Burden, Porcelain Heart, and Hex Omega. Plus a few covers they have done: Soldier of Fortune (from Deep Purple), Remember Tomorrow (from Iron Maiden), Would? (from Alice in Chains), Den standinga resan (from Marie Fredrikson). And the one song I do like from them that has growling is "The Drapery Falls", but the live version on Lamentations... it is just so great that it has become my very favourite song from them.
