Topic: Favorite Section from Genesis "Supper's Ready" Posted: January 19 2018 at 12:11 |
Exactly what it sounds like; what's your favorite section from this Genesis classic? While it's such a perfect song, I have to go with "Apocalypse in 9/8".

I have always loved Lover´s Leap. It´s just so great, when after Horizon started immediately that first part, where Gabriel is singing in a two octaves. I love the whole Supper´s but it really starts so great way!

I don't have a favorite part, I love the whole piece. A truly beautiful composition.

The part that gives me chills is the As Sure as Eggs is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet). When it transitions from Apocolypse into that triad on the tubular bells and back into the opening theme it's just so triumphant. The live version has that Hackett flourish in just the right spot "And he's crying WEEAWWW! in a loud voice...". Then it fades with all those Hackett layers swirling around (studio version). I just wish it would go on longer. I think the live version does, and the video has the clouds moving in fast motion. That's mint.

I like the transition from Willow Farm to Apocalypse in 9/8. Not sure where one really ends and the other begins. I'm actually not that crazy about Banks' lead to Follow, but it does serve the sense of the climax well enough.

- I really like the first part. Lover's Leap.
- So I like the reprise in As Sure as Eggs.
- What clinches it is the outro. Expanding from the simple acoustic-style ballad becomes broad and triumphant measure, ascending with Hackett's magnificent solo which evokes the angels Peter sings about in the vocal.
So I go for Sure as Eggs is Eggs. There are some times when I've played only that part.

As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs.
There’s just something extra special in that piece. The first time I heard it, when Gabriel
belted out “Jerusalem”, it literally sent shivers up my spine. In subsequent listens it only happened on
rare occasions and not as intense.

Each section contributes to the others so well that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So, it is hard to choose. But I have to agree that I still get spine chills when the song begins, and I still feel regret when the song comes to an end.

agree 100%---but the finale ---as Sure as Eggs--where we go back to the young couple about to get fried---and Hacketts emotional wailing on his guitar toped off with Jerusalem ---makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

Agreed. My favourite moment (on the whole Foxtrot album, in fact) is the instrumental part from about 14:15 to 15:35, to be more precise. I really wish that they could have extended this section out, perhaps as a separate standalone piece, since I feel that it captures the magical tranquility that the band had mastered on Trespass but only returned to sparingly in their later works.

I love you guys, all great answers!
For me personally, the song peaks for me when Gabriel spits out, what I'd consider THE archetypal prog/metal lyrics:
666 is no longer alone He's getting out the marrow in your backbone And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll Gonna blow right down inside your soul Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand-new tune
For the love of the prog gods, the bit about "Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon; in blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand-new tune" is absolutely phenomenal, and pulls my spirit to the surface of my being like a magnet does iron filings.
