One of my Top 10 favorite albums of all-time.

Side Two is, for me, one of the rare "Perfect 10" album sides--which makes voting for one a tough chore.

Though "Nostalgia" is what sucked me into David Sylvian world, it is "Weathered Wall" that transports me into Prog Heaven: Amazing lyric and vocal, amazing atmosphere (thanks to Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay, and Richard Barbieri), hypnotic rhythm (thanks to David's brother, Steve Jansen), and the other-worldly trumpet of Jon Hassell.

This is a fantastic album where not a single step is taken wrongly. When compiling a list of my top 200 or so songs for this forum some time ago, this was the highest scoring album, placing no fewer than 5 songs on my list if I remember it correctly, and the remaining two are great as well.

My vote will go to the title track.

I love the whole album, but for some reason I can't explain, Red Guitar is my favorite.

Nice! I was afraid this poll would be met with derision or sass. Nice to find other people who share an affinity for this kind of genius, this kind of music!

Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.....a long time.
I like Gone To Earth better ......need to revisit Brilliant Trees before casting a vote.

No derision at all. This is timeless music that deserves to be known and appreciated by anyone interested in progressive music. I reviewed this album on PA back in the day when I was still able to produce a fair number of reviewers, but this poll gave me the opportunity to listen to it in a more attentive way. Though it is not easy to pick a favourite, I went for "The Ink in the Well", which deserved to get some love.

^ amen darling.  One of the artists I picked up from you, along with Japan I had missed while digging Willie and Waylon in the early 80's before being hit over the hit by Belinda and lusting over her for the next half decade.

Red Guitar..  loved that from first listen..  this last listen nearly had me chuck the beer out the window and grab a glass of wine. Beer seemed out of place to the sounds Sylvian was putting out on that one man.

that one good thing you could say about the Zep you put on after...  sh*tty beer fits it perfectly hahah

Havenīt heard any Sylvians solos, although liked Japan quite much. Now watched he has made quite many. Maybe I start with this.

Title track is what I go back to most often. I think it's, oddly enough, my least favorite Sylvian solo record, though, despite being one of his most celebrated.

The following albums are excellent too. Gone To Earth is not perfect, but there are 3 or 4 good titles here. "Secret of the Beehive" is the only one in my opinion that can be compared to the first, but with less diversity. Blemish (2003) is another masterpiece of music. Abstraction here can be a problem for some, but the album has been remixed with more instruments and the add of rhythms under the title: The Only Daughter.

I only own Plight And Premonition as well as Flux And Mutability, both are outstanding listens. I need to explore more of his solo work.

I agree Tom. His collaboration with Holger Czukay is a must.

Another good album (but less avant garde) is his 2005 album recorded under the name : Nine Horses.

I have collected everything David has ever done: Japan/Rain Tree Crow; Czukay, Fripp, Fennesz, Alto Nova, Sakamoto, & brother, Steve, collaborations, even the non-studio stuff--which I rarely do. I am a fan of it all. But the BEST thing he ever did was the 86 tour with Steve, David Torn and Mark Isham. aMAZing!
