If prog genres were wine, what would they be?

Canterbury = Barbaresco (the lighter version of Barolo, see Jazz Rock/Fusion)
Crossover = Barley wine (not quite wine, not quite beer)
Eclectic = Chateauneuf Du Pape (a blend of up to 18 varieties)
Experimental = Gik (blue wine)
Heavy = Petit Syrah (big, bold)
Jazz Rock/Fusion = Barolo (deep, complex, powerful)
Krautrock = Gewurztraminer (unquestionably German)
Neo-Prog = Table wine (fruity, but not particularly forward)
Post/Math Rock = Pet-Nat (fizzy wine for techno-hipsters)
Prog Folk = Pinot Grigio (mild and unassertive)
Electronic = Zinfandel (jammy, peppery, racy, with a long finish)
Metal = Port (fortified to kick your butt)
Proto-Prog = Mead (early version of wine)
Psychedelic/Space = Absinthe (unapologetically trippy)
RIO/Avant = Beaujolais Nouveau (more about the movement than the wine)
RPI = Chianti (unquestionably Italian)
Symphonic = Champagne (bright, sparkling, bubbly)
Tech/Extreme = Jalapeno Wine (fiery hot)
Zeuhl = Retsina (fermented with tree sap, an acquired taste)

Actually Gewürztraminer has its origin in Alsace which belongs to France, though it did belong to Germany once and was heavily debated about between these two countries for 300 years. The German name is only because the predominant language in Alsace is German (actually an Allemanic dialect of German). So Gewürztraminer is actually anything but "unquestionably German".

Krautrock is more like mulled wine - some strange flavours like cardamom, cinnamon and cloves added and with quite a kick.

An interesting thread - well done for your efforts - even if I don't follow all your choices.

Symphonic prog would be a warm, robust and comforting Barossa Shiraz, while neo-prog would be a bold Super-Tuscan! Prog metal has to be an American Zinfandel - a lot of power but sometimes lacking in finesse! I think a Riesling perfectly sums up Kraut Rock!

Maybe you want to think about wines for classic bands? Yes would be a Burgundian Pinot Noir, Genesis would be a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon while I think ELP would have to be the Champagne - a classic, bubbly made from the three grapes - which sadly has now lost its fizz too soon! Jethro Tull definitely an aged Vintage Port whilst King Crimson has to be an astringent, soured red like a Chianti Classico! Barolo for Gentle Giant - roses and tar aromas! The possibilities are endless!

Good choices although not all of them are wines, but Metal Prog should be Malbec, the boldest, stronger, harshest red wine of them all.

In terms of "quite not", I would rather think of vermouth, or - more noble - Pineau des Charentes

I fully agree with Friede on this. Gewürztraminer comes from the Alsace, where wines are named after their grape variety. I would recommend Gewürztraminer rather than Krautrock, but that's a matter of personal taste Wink.

Absinthe is not a wine, but a spirit with an ABV of 55% and a small quantity of thujone, which affects the central nervous system, but probably does not have psychedelic effects.

Neo-Prog = Mad Dog!  I love it!. 

Mad Dog (Neo-Prog), the wine (music) for someone who doesn't have the taste to appreciate fine wine (good prog), but wants desperately to set themselves apart from common beer (rock).
