Supremely talented.. but what counts is what you do with that talent and to these ears.. so little of what they did is even remotely interesting. |
I find it interesting how the Mahavishnu Orchestra pushed forward with the non-cadential approach to music that Miles Davis developed. In other words, the chords they played over did not seek resolution on the one chord. The chords were no longer part of a progression in the traditional sense, and leads followed scales and modes rather than individual chords.

Birds of Fire perfects the sound that was invented on "Inner Mounting Flame." Sometimes, this music is a little too busy for me, but I still appreciate what Mahavishnu Mk I was doing more than the orchestra-augmented, mellower Mk II. John McLaughlin takes what John Coltrane did with a saxophone and translates it into the rock idiom. Birds of Fire is more melodically and compositionally intentional than "Inner Mounting Flame," and really shows off the range of what this band can do.
I always find it interesting that Robert Fripp, when asked to comment on Mahavishnu Orchestra, said that he had to avoid listening to them. The idea was, they were covering similar territory, and to listen and be influenced would derail the music he was exploring in the "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" era. |
That's kind of why Fripp is a genius; most musicians don't realize how much of a subconscious influence - for better or worse - music can have! I'm close friends with Patrick Mameli of Pestilence, and he says the same thing: he can't listen to similar bands. Too influential. His riffs end up being very jagged and discordant, but original sounding as a result. Maybe it was the same way with Fripp? Very interesting!

Birds of Fire first, Visions a close second.
