Wow. Tough call. I'm going to go with VDGG just because I know them better. I have just recently been gaining a real appreciation for Zappa. Some things are mind blowing but some of his "wackier" stuff just turns me off.

Easy one. I actually listen to Zappa.

Like VdGG, but not even close for me. Zappa easily...

He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

Genius beats respectable. Zappa is genius.
I messed around with a Van der Graaf Generator once and got zappad. That is how I aquired wisdom. |

Pleasantly surprised at the score right now, as I thought VDGG would be out in front.
Voted Zappa.

Zappa's best stuff is great but I just have more emotional connection to VDGG's music overall.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I'm more familiar with VDGG so they get the vote. Love Zappa's music too though.

No knock on VDGG, but Zappa by millions of miles. Zappa is like three bands in one and is so interesting down the little details of his work. VDGG is on the second-tier of the Classic Prog Greats in my mind, along with bands like Camel.
