I've always thought it was quite a coincidence that three of the all time great prog guitarists were not only named Steve, but also had the last initial H.  Tell us what you think of these three and what, if any, ways they stand out.

Personally, I find it an interesting comparison. For work with their respective groups, I tend to favor Howe.  For their solo work, I tend to favor Hackett.  Balancing the two, I may actually lean Hillage.

Steve Hackett of course. Howe comes close in second, and Hillage in third, not far behind.

I guess I shouldn't vote here since I'm not familiar with this Hillage person, but if I did I'd throw my man Howe a vote. Obviously love his work with Yes, and also great with Asia.

Howe is the most versatile of all 3, being technically first rate on electric, acoustic, classical, pedal steel, slide, shoot...anything with strings.  But Hackett gets the vote for not only his technical abilities and contributions to his primary band, but a long and excellent solo career much more consistent with greater output than Howe's.  I like Hillage as well, but Hackett/Howe are just in a different league than Gong's 2nd Submarine Captain LOL

If you're interested, I recommend giving Fish Rising a spin. It's widely regarded as essential prog, and is highly regarded among both fans and critics.

well said--and sort of agree---just sometimes I think of Howes diverse guitar work and sounds on Yes Album , Fragile, CTTE, Tales,Relayer and GFTO and I'm blown away---but Hackett's solo work is way better than Howe's

But Howe will get yet another award this year when he is given the prestigious Prog God award---alongside Gabriel Wakeman Banks and ANderson---receiving it before HackettShocked .

I have more albums by Howe but I prefer Hackett. Go figure. I have one album by Hillage (I think).

Khan!

Been many years since I last listened to Fish Rising, and perhaps I would prefer it now, but I was disappointed with that album. I got it because I loved Khan's Space Shanty.

Anyway, I vote for Steve Hillage. Love Khan and Arzachel. He guested on Egg's The Civil Service, and I vote for him for his involvement on Gong's great Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy. I also liked his Green album, though it is not one that I remember well now.
