What about Bongwater from New York City. 
They're more of a Prog-Art or Performance-art-prog, but in their heyday they were the kings of the bizarre - with their brilliant albums THE POWER OF PUSSY, THE BIG SLEEP, etc. 
And classic songs such as RIDE MY SEESAW(yes a cover of the great Moody Blues track), HE LOVED THE WEATHER, NICK CAVE DOLLS(!!), etc.
