One of the movies of the soft-porno series "Emanuelle" starring Sylvia Kristel had King Crimson's "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" playing in the background in one scene. This was not in the year the movie came out but about 15 years later (the movies of the "Emanuelle" series have a certain cult status in Europe, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, and are occasionally rerun in small cinemas that specialize in movies with an off status). Don't ask me how I came to wind up in this movie; the circumstances are a bit embarrassing . This was years before I met Jean; I was still heterosexual back then and also still had my hair.

Years ago, a friend managed a video rental store (remember those?). To say he borrowed the occasional hardcore film was a given. One day he rang me and went "Guess what? Tangerine Dream's and Mannheim Steamroller's music in this porno!" (Used without the bands' consent, naturally.) |

Inevitably there are going to be a lot of electronic music film soundtracks (not just Vangelis and TD). Paul Haslinger (ex TD) pretty much makes a living out of it nowadays.

Good trivia question. What does the rock band Yes and a suit made of meat have in common? |

Several of the films in the series had some outstanding music. My old roommate had 3 albums and played them a lot on his show.

Slightly off-topic but Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" is featured in a new coffee advert with George Clooney. I'm still trying to figure out the connection.

I was a bit surprised to hear a version of Frank Zappa's "King Kong" on what I think was the first episode of "Big Little Lies".

I don't know if this has been stated yet, but "Starless" was a big part of the movie "Mandy" staring Nicholas Cage. Pretty rad movie, so hearing KC in their just made it that much better.

Paternoster did an album in the early 70s that was recently released by Now Again records. It's fantastic if you're into the more kraut heavy side of soundtracks....
e; Mandy was beyond great. If you see this post, watch Mandy. Edited by whales_laughter - December 05 2018 at 20:05 |

Little known efforts from King Crimson as they sound tracked Emmanuelle. (Well, ... effectively...). S'pose Mike Oldfield deserves a mention for Tubular Bells. ;) Tangerine Dream did Thief starring James Caan. (Phaedra sound tracks this post btw...)

I know it's TV not film, but the UK original version of 'Life on Mars' has 4 tracks by Hawkwind, 4 by Uriah Heep, plus Jethro Tull, Barclay James harvest, Roxy Music, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, Bowie and Moody Blues. The US version is decidedly less proggy.

Well, really, Mike deserves the mention for another OSCAR winning film. The fact that TB was used in that one film was more than likely RB buying his way in, and it ended helping the film some, but the music if grossly mis-used!

Thief consists mostly of original music and some material sourced from '79's Force Majeure ("Thru Metamorphic Rocks" was rearranged for "Igneous") and some bits that show up on Exit the same year. Thief and Exit are two of my favorite TD recordings and they honestly sound like companion albums to me.
