Some of their stuff was similar but each was still very much their own band. Which do you prefer?

I love Gentle Giant and listen to them a lot. Even more lately for some reason.

But they're never going to top Tull in my mind.

Tull, and it's not even vaguely close.

TULL!

GG would have never come up with Songs From The Wood. That is all.

Would it have made a difference if I asked "which band is the best?"

I wouldn't have wanted them to. Songs' is a softer side of 'Tull that's outdistanced by most of 'Giant's output.

Sorry, of course that didn't need to be said. If the question was which band is best, MY answer would have been 'both, equally'.

^You still could have chosen both since I had that option. To me "prefer" means you think one band is better than the other.

the only things either group did worth a sh*t were each's first 4 albums.. and as much as I love those GG albums..  they pale to what Tull did before they became .... Dull.

Haha, no way! Tull's folk trilogy (SFTW, HH, Stormwatch ca. '77-'79), plus MITG (8th album, '75) are TOPS!

I love GG (at least everything up to and including Interview) but they never released an album that approached anywhere near the complete masterpiece of Passion Play or Brick which are just on another level.  Vote for Tull.

Of course he was trying to insult me when I had pissed him off once...

Evidently, Phillippe had the musical perception of a blood-engorged tick. And his preference for teutonic folk like Ougenweide would probably fit well in the making of cheese. You sit and wait for the milk to curdle.
