Seeing as we have taken over the site I have decided to run a RIO/Avant World Cup

This will have 12 groups of 5 to start with the top 2 advancing

The #1 seeds were based on the original 8 RIO bands plus 4 additional seeds.

The balance were picked across countries and based on number of rankings. I kept bands from the same country apart.

Top seeds - Henry Cow, Univers Zero, Aksak Maboul, Etron Fou Leloublan, Stormy Six, Samla Mammas Manna, Art Zoyd, Art Bears, Present, Thinking Plague, Cardiacs, Frank Zappa.

Don't worry about not knowing all the bands, just vote for your favorite

Group D
Samla Mammas Manna - Sweden - 672 ratings - 4.11 average
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - USA - 441 - 4.00
Vezhlivy Otkaz - Russia - 183 - 3.96
Albert Marcoeur - France - 98 - 3.83
Tipographica - Japan - 62 - 4.17

Tough group this one. Very good bands here. I'll go with Samla Mammas Manna, but it's very close.

I would probably vote for Tipographic if more of their discog wasn't OOP (thus depriving me from hearing it).

That said, I'm probably going to anyway. :p

Tipographica by a whisker over SMM.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

Yup, at least one big final contenders (SMM, SGM or Marcoeur), will not make it to the next round

This always looked like a personal Group Of Death when I seeded this as SMM, SGM & VO are all personal favorites.

SGM by a landslide, three perfect albums, their only downside is they disbanded too soon. FSE is good but not at the same level. Wish the rumoured fourth SGM and Idiot Flesh albums would finally be released...
