Talk Talk have recorded an absolute masterpiece, Spirit of Eden (1988),
and other great albums like The Colour of Spring and Laughing Stock (and Mark Hollis' album). But even in the earlier LP there are some hidden jewels. For example, in It's my Life there are the famous Such a Shame, then Renee but, most of all, the little known Tomorrow Started.... Great great song, atmospheric, languid, melancholic, with an existential spleen. What do you think of it? And what are your hidden jewels?

I love new wave as much as post-rock so for me the whole Talk Talk journey was a pleasant one. The debut album is excellent in my world :)
Don't miss Hollis' solo album. It was basically the next chapter after Talk Talk ended with Laughing Stock.

Radiohead's "How To Disappear Completely" is basically "Tomorrow Started" tribute, including this trumpet arrangement

...and another awesome version of Call In the Night Boy: I think this was even released before the It's My Life album, on the B-side of the (also great) My Foolish Friend. An early sign of thugs to come.

Harris and Webb could pull off something great without Hollis, too. Actually this album can keep up with Talk Talk's (and anyone's) very best if you ask me.

I'm glad Talk Talk has been getting the love on the Archives. I have always been attracted to their music after I heard the album "It's My Life", and was thrilled when they moved into a more experimental and ambient style as they continued.

^Talk Talk are actually considered forerunners of the post rock genre. I guess you could call them proto posties.

I know its all a matter of opinion and everything, but I have also appreciated the progressive leanings of other bands from the same era like "Tears for Fears" and "Yello". Same thing with some newer bands like "Fleet Foxes", "Animal Collective" and "Grizzly Bear". These are bands just as progressive as "Radiohead", "Super Furry Animals" or "Woven Hand", in my opinion even sometimes more so, and these are also bands I admire and appreciate, but I do also understand that is my opinion, and I also consider anything innovative as being progressive in most cases, so my opinion may also be more lenient than others in some cases.

I'm relistening to Mark Hollis' solo album now. For some reason it had much less airplay in my place (and elsewhere) than the Talk Talk albums. I wasn't so sure whether it keeps the same quality as Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, but it has some striking similarities soundwise - if anything it's even more minimalist and vulnerable. Actually I realise that it's five star material as well. I love this in particular: No idea whose life this is about.

If the world had only place for, say, 10 songs, I could nominate both "Living in Another World" and "After the Flood" for inclusion. Genius!
