I consider Bakshi's Lord of the Rings to be an adult animated film. That's my favorite. I love the vibe that film has and the rotoscoping gives it a surreal feel at times.

Bakshi and Frazetta's Fire and Ice is pretty cool too, or at least my memory of it is. Haven't seen it in many years.

Grave of the Fireflies comes close. but of that list I think I'd give it to Triplets of Belleville.

The Illusionist  is another massive favourite from the same director.

That would be my vote.

Here's one too few people know of. A superb film if you enjoy Watership and Plague.

For me, it would be a toss-up between Fire nd Ice, Heavy Metal and The Plague Dogs (the second Richard Adams adaptation after Watership Down, and much darker than that!).

Two more that are missing: Bakshi's (more) obscure semi-classic Heavy Traffic, and Cool World.

Love the man's work. He signed my DVD of Heavy Traffic. Very unusual film with some live action bookends.

Hi,

ALLEGRO NON TROPPO -- is a much more mature version of Fantasia, and for my tastes a lot better with more with it, although it's hard to not love the dragons, and the alligators and whatever else dancing like crazy on the screen! The music in it is exceptional, and aside from one sexy one, and then the other a comment on the war, and the other a political comment on all the followers in the world ... in the end, it is a very enjoyable thing, although some people thought the end bit with the monster was getting to be too much ... but the cartoonist with the postcard ... is just too much, and outstanding!

THE POINT -- I don't remember this a lot, but it was based on Nilsson's song. It wasn't great, but it was interesting.

There also was an X-Rated version of Fritz the Cat, that was quite extraordinary, the acts and everything else notwithstanding. It was dirty and then some ... but man ... was it ever fun to watch and laugh to!

Very tempted to go with Spirited Away, which is such a trip, but ultimately went for Perfect Blue.
An anime that captures the best aspects of Brian DePalma and David Lynch all in one film? An animated flick that Darren Aronofsky has borrowed ideas from on multiple occasions while not really achieving that level of tension nailed by Perfect Blue during the last half? Oh, I'm there.

Cruder than later stuff by the guy like Paprika and Millennium Actress, but the way Perfect Blue evolves into this living nightmare is perfectly realized, something almost never seen in animation.

Okay, I'll address the elephant in the room. How do these films hold up against Steely Dan?

Certainly, poll whichever selections you'd like. That is your right. But this PA, after all, and a time-honored response is to bitch about better selections you left off. Wink

Indeed, and it is my time-honoured tradition to bitch about bitching. Wink
