Animals...

He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

The general public certainly likes Animals better since it has sold 4 million albums. Going for the one has only sold 500,000.

Interesting that I think PF would do the same to every time-similar Yes release in the 70s till 83? Meddle probably bests YA in units. Dark Side crushes CTTE or Tales, I'm sure Wish beats Relayer I'd wager Animals crushes Going, as you have confirmed. Wall beats Tormato/Drama combined I bet, despite being an expensive double. But!! I bet 90125 gives Final Cut a run for its money in sales. Just my guesses. I'm too lazy to look them up.

I have looked this stuff up numerous times so I'll help fill in the blanks here. You are right about Pink Floyd selling more albums than Yes. In most cases by far. All of your specific examples are correct except one(90125 has sold more than TFC based on certifications). The final cut has sold 2 million but 90125 sold 3 million. Although by now TFC may have sold as much if not more. Also, a momentary lapse of reason has sold 4 million where as Big Generator "only" 1 million. Both bands also released albums in 1994. However, the divsion bell sold 3 million while Talk still hasn't even gone gold(500,000) and to be honest probably never will. Album sales aren't always updated or at least that information isn't made available to the public unless someone associated with the band requests it from the riaa and they have to pay to do so. Usually the sales figures are just sitting in a computer somewhere and we will never know what the most recent figures are(again unless it is made available to the public). The last Yes update was in 1998. I would like to think they have sold at least a few more albums since then. One thing to consider however is that before DSOTM Yes were for a brief time more popular than PF. TYA up to and including CTTE charted higher than the pre DSOTM albums(at least in the US). After DSOTM all bets were off and at some point PF became far more popular(not just bigger than Yes but way bigger than just about any other band).

Slightly misleading as GFTO actually sold half a million in the first month which is not bad.

I don't like Animals. Not necessary to say which of these got my vote.

I'm sure it did but according to the riaa it hasn't sold any since then or at least it hasn't gone platinum(unlike Tormato which has).

Awaken is one of Yes' best songs. But I never thought the rest of GFTO was at the same level.

For me Turn of the Century is a worthy companion to Awaken in the album, but I don't really care for just about anything else on the album. |

Which is bizarre, as there were two fairly big hit singles from GFTO, and this would normally boost the album sales. |

I'm almost tempted to vote both equally, on the grounds of Awaken vs Dogs, which are two of my favourite all time prog rock epics, but I'll give the vote to GFTO, as I always vote Animals, and GFTO needs the votes here.

Awaken is beyond amazing, though as a whole, Animals wins this poll for me.

I'd be really surprised that GFTO has sold less than a million since release time.
valid point... Century is actually relatively good (it would find space on Tormato, but not on their previous albums (except for TFTO).... and given that Awaken's 15+ mins and Century's 8 mins, that accounts for a good 60% of the album. GFTO being relatively short if memory serves, but if you take out the two Pigs On The Wings out from animal, that should even it out. But there s still no contest.... Animals all the way. |
