oh you missed out of the fun days of the site...though you might have observed it... and it was a very different site than we had today. There were some that were hard core..  hard and brutal and God help you if liked some particular groups LOLWink.. or worse.. had opinions that they didn't like.

It is a much nicer site today. Much more polite.. even if not quite as exciting or interesting.  Anyhow.. nice to talk at you.  I don't really post as much as I used to but have the time since I'm on a bit of vacation from the job.. the best of of one.. a semi permanent one...  but a stay at home type of vacation.. and it is fun to just shoot the bull here.

I've been following here for a loooooooooong time, perhaps from the first half of the first decade of the new millennium. Wink

I guess I may be counted amongst the semi-authoritative type. I follow the knowledge like an authoritative, yet spend somewhat less time and concentration on the ones that doesn't do it for me.

I've always liked PA, so cheers. Star

I see what you are getting at..  well you found the right site here. Here we have both types as I see them... the authoritative type.. and those who care little to nothing about prog per se.. and just like what they like and that is the end of it.

What you saw there there I have never really seen here..  no single band that all agree that one must like. There are simply too many different types and flavors of prog and progressive rock and the really great thing about the site is there are many fans of all the different types of music and bands within the site. Easy to find a place.. a niche within what you like.. and yet if ones want to be the 'authoritative' type as you call them.. there is a lot of opportunity for that. See what you call that .. we had special names for.  Genre team members whose job was to know and evaluate the music.. regardless of whether one liked it or not.. and were expected to 'know' prog .. not simply be a fan of it or the groups they liked.

Sure, if you assert to be authoritative about prog it is almost mandatory to know Pink Floyd well. Same for Metallica on metal, Dream Theater on prog metal. Yet things weren't that simple here. People were overwhelmingly imposing to respect and/or like them in all ways, and their musical and historical values were not exhaustive concerning respect.

Not sure if counted as hype, yet until the mp3 and especially internet age, Metallica for metal and Pink Floyd for prog were acknowledged as mandatory for the genres' listeners, and bashing them was almost like blasphemy -while you could hype as extravagantly as you like without any drawbacks, with full support actually- in Turkey. When the internet and forum age began, it shattered with intense debates and gradually proven obsolete. Also thanks to Prog Archives and all, I (we) understood that Yes, King Crimson, Genesis etc. are at least as important.

One of the good results internet brought was those debates and their fruitful outcomes.

today.. a new page is turned.. whatever man.. it's your brain.. rot it out if you want to .

interesting...  hype? or what is generally considered greatest (even topping all the Kennedy sh*t) conspiracy theory of all time.  Really interesting to read of how that came about.. some radio station in the midwest (how good the drugs must have been then) ....and it just took off from there. Even when he showed himself. did interviews and pictures to show he was still alive there were those that claimed he was indeed a fake because.. I kid you not..  there were scientists doing cranial measures of pictures of pre death Paul and post death and said they differed. LOL

Wild sh*t man.. but hype?   Nah....

Only classic rock bands are great.

I highly doubt this senseless statement because are many great modern rock and metal bands

^ There you go, or worse those stories about how the Beatles' songs were secretly written by a pair of Scottish remote viewers or whatever.

I remember Oasis being highly oversold in their time.

I remember a lot of hype around this guy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Forbert - being the new Dylan, which he wasn't and he pretty much disappeared.

Beer

and yeah..  I sort of have always seen him as a one trick pony... very good at what he is good at.. but very limited overall and that works for rock drummers.. it is a not a good characteristic for a prog drummer.

hype?  One more suited to groups rather than individuals whose limitations or shortcomings are often plainly evident. And we touched on Clapton who perhaps over the many years and coke addled years became of shell of what he was and is forgotten by many.

the closest I could think of one would be Neil Peart.  A fine drummer no doubt but.. there is a reason he came from England with his tail between his legs and took a job with a band with no name or whatever..  much like Geddy.  His legend is much to do about the legion of fanatical fans and their hype but really.. he was merely a good drummer in a genre filled them .... and more than a few who were fantastically good and could and did play circles around Peart.

Not at all.. I used this for a movie forum, and thought why not music... I used to like Neil Peart, but he's kinda robotic. I guess I like the jazzier guys more. Neil is stiff.
