Two fellows whom both sing, write songs and knows how to play the guitar. Who dpbyou favour of the two. Both with a good singing voice, both can write songs and both can play the guitar quite well.

It's a close call, but I'll go with Paul Gilbert.

Steven Wilson at songwriting and singing, Paul Gilbert at guitar. Overall, I'd pick SW.

Until now, I never thought of comparing the two.
I voted Wilson. |

I'm not sure why comparing them. 2 very good musicians but completely different. Technically hands down Paul. He is a freak. And in my book (I truly enjoy gifted musicians) he'll get my vote.

Exactly how I look at it. I don't find Wilson an interesting song writer (I'm not trolling; he bores the sh*t out of me, all of his bands, projects, and remasters), so that doesn't do much compared to Paul's discography, skill, and much-more-interesting playing style.

Gilbert is technically one of the maestros of modern guitar, mostly shred but he can play many other styles. But his songwriting is not out of this world (although there's much of him I haven't heard).
Wilson is much more of a songwriter and engineer, his playing is good but it's far from Gilbert's, and in a completely different style, much less technical. I will vote for Gilbert but as has been said, oranges and potatoes, it's like comparing David Gilmour and Steve Vai.
