A-Z of Space Rock

Having finished listing every Japanese Space Rock artist I know of (with the obvious exclusion of Acid Mothers Temple) it's time to get back to featuring some more artists and albums, starting with....

ANGEL IN HEAVY SYRUP     From Osaka comes Angel in Heavy Syrup, and if you've ever seen a photo of the all-female line-up, then you'll know it's more a case of angels in heavy mascaraSmile

Sorry, but Ozric Tentacles' albums all the sound the same to me, so inevitably, they all ended up with the same 3-star rating. Tongue

There's a whole galaxy of Space Rock for me still to explore too, including Agusa, Himmellegeme, Magick Brother & Mystic Sister, none of which I'm familiar with, although I'll gladly add them all to the universal album listings. I'll take a guess that Himmellegeme are German and that Magick Brother and Mystic Sister are Gong and Camel tribute bands, respectively. Smile

I believe that Syd Barrett invented a distinctive style which it's presence remained in Space Rock decades after he became a recluse . Mainly his Space Rock songs such as Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive and in some cases the conceptual idea being repeated by Hawkwind, GONG, and Ozric Tentacles.

No doubt that teenagers in England during the late 50s and early 60s who played guitar had heard of The Ventures and had listened to the Outer Limits theme or Twilight Zone. There is no reason to have doubt about The Shadows hearing Sci Fi themes played on guitar.

Syd Barrett was definitely not a virtuoso type of musician and it's more realistic and fact based to acknowledge that there were other people in his time that helped to create an influential foundation for Space Rock. It evolved out of Psychedelic Rock but contained different ideas . Syd Barrett created a part of it that musicians chose to follow such as Amon Duul II YETI or the first Hawkwind album. Where the influence of the early Pink Floyd is heard.

I believe several of the early Space Rock bands needed to consult with Electronic artists for the educational side and goal of combining Rock with electronics. They were already aware of The Beatles association with Beaver and Krause and Delia Derbyshire but newly formed Space Rock bands interest in individuals like that revolved around a different purpose.

Field recordings, white noise, editing, the usage of generators and oscillating sounds from the Moog Synthesizer, the Mellotron in some cases, and experimenting with unorthodox recording methods all became a learning process for Space Rock bands because the style itself had not yet been invented. After the style was invented bands began expanding and taking the music further in its natural progression. Krautrock bands were mainly responsible for that. Using a phase shifter to alter the sound of a Mellotron . Pounding on oil barrels and applying a distant repeat from a echoplex. Placing kitty litter on top of kettle drums and striking them with mallets . Setting up recording equipment to record the sounds of the forest or the ocean. The idea to pursue these measures alongside the usage of Synthesizers gave Krautrock characteristics and distinctiveness.

The unity of people experimenting with this was a free spirited experience. It was a magical and inspirational time period with people working together in experimentation. Technology having limitations at that time pushed musicians to go outdoors and find the sound that would give completeness to their Space Rock epic. All the magic that went in to this learning process has been replaced with modern technology. It's an old school method that was very strange , unique and pure fun. Not unlike Beaver and Krause IN A WILD SANCTUARY. A totally dedicated method/concept of making albums..where if most people witnessed you indulging in that you'd be considered an ideal candidate for psychiatric treatment 🤔

I remember reading something a long time ago about Pink Floyd wanting to meet and consult with Delia Derbyshire. Supposedly she payed for a taxi to transport the band. She was working at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. She had re- worked or re-arranged a piece written by another writer which became the Dr. Who theme. But she also recorded obscure Electronic pieces which gained the interest of Roger Waters and Syd Barrett. She was using sound generators and cutting tape to form notes dating back as far as 1963. She had released an album titled THE DREAMS which contained tape recordings of people describing their dreams back by a darkscaped sustaining keyboard sound that was made popular years later by Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno.

It's always a possibility that Roger Waters was somewhat influenced by that idea as strange voice overdubs were usually present in the music of Pink Floyd. Syd Barrett was a fan of AMMM MUSIC and he seemed to be influenced by the guitar player and the style of sound effects which were evident on "BIKE". It's merely speculation that Delia Derbyshire had a future influence on the members of Pink Floyd, but the possibility of that is hinted or leaves a person wondering since Delia Derbyshire was an innovator . Certain sounds and rhymically produced electronics on her early BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP recordings can be observed on early recordings by The Residents, but it's also a possibility that her creative usage of sound generators was highly influential to others that are difficult to imagine or are displaced and masksed by modernism and technology..however the basis for it came from her head. She influenced the experimental side to Rock , but sadly it is not acknowledged enough...but I strongly believe she unconditionally had a lot to do with its growth and expansion in the 60s and 70s.

She wasn't using a Moog Synthesizer in 1964 and Bob Moog did not make it readily available for musicians and the film industry until the late 60s. She was utilizing sound generators to produce sounds that were later captured on the Moog Synthesizer and so Bob Moog made those sounds accessible by designing it to be played manually on a keyboard. Much of this interest from Rock bands also derived from Stockhousen who was experimenting with generators. The band CAN used a sound generator.

The idea was to fuse electronics with Rock. Roger Waters and Ron Geesin had some interest in each other musically. It's difficult to know what they observed in the Electronic Music and Avant Garde of the 20th century. It could be coincidental that Roger Waters borrowed the Synthesizer rhythm for "On The Run" from Mort Garson "LEAVE THE DRIVING TO US" but both tracks have similarities in style and sound.

It seems obvious that "SEVERAL SPECIES OF SMALL FURRY ANIMALS" practically emulates the style of Ron Geesin just as many of RICK WRIGHT'S keyboard sounds on Saucerful Of Secrets, More, and Ummagumma are truly reminiscent of the sounds Delia Derbyshire created in 1964 and additionally had similarities to Tangerine Dream's early material.

It's difficult to make an accurate conclusion as to how Space Rock formed, but it seems logical that Rock bands were consulting with Electronic artists in those times. Electronic music was just starting to receive recognition and the experimentation of its sound produced in Rock hadn't been thought of or perhaps pursued by bands until Beaver and Krause started hanging out with George Martin.

Krautrock was a very inventive style that intrigued me. Popol Vuh in the early years actually captured a totally unique style of keyboard sounds . Terry Riley was very creative and innovative on RAINBOW IN CURVED AIR. It all seemed to form quickly because it was the golden age of Electronic Music and a lot of musicians had lots of new ideas for music that hadn't been invented before. It was fascinating!

Hawkwind in the early years had the slightest influence of Syd Barrett's songwriting. For example "Astronomy Domine" could have easily fit into a Hawkwind album like In Search Of Space. "INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE" , "LUCIFER SAM, and ASTRONOMY DOMINE " contained a specific style that surfaced through the music of Amon Duul II, CAN ( certain tracks or jam sections), early GURU GURU which is often labeled as having an influence of Jimi Hendrix actually has an early Pink Floyd style on tracks like "SPACE SHIP" and various excerpts throughout KANGURU.

NEU and ASH RA TEMPEL seemed to follow that path as well..but it's important to realize that Krautrock had great originality. In the early 70s it was completely magical and it lured me in. The band GONG seemed to tread on that territory. I felt that Daevid Allen's writing had similarities to Syd Barrett. For example "The Isle Of Everywhere" and tracks from Camemberet Electrique. GONG were thought to be Canterbury...which they were, but they certainly innovated Space Rock even further making a new quantum leap and further leaving their mark to surface through other bands of their time.

A-Z of Space Rock

AMON DUUL II
A Krautrock band from Munich who are anything but dull, and if you've heard the original Amon Duul (whose albums sound like they were recorded in someone's garage), you'll know how much better their second incarnation is. Viva La Trance! Smile

Hi,

What should be said is that John was an ex-Carmen member, before Jethro Tull.

AND, what's more is that this band was from LA ... John Glascock was taken away from Carmen, and it essentially broke the band up ... the band had upstaged David Bowie on a Midnight Special, one of those shows on late in the weekends. Clip is on the net, and it is tight and very good!!!

It's a real shame, because in my book the three albums CARMEN had were outstanding, and I'm not sure that he helped improve Jethro Tull as much as he was in CARMEN. Might be debatable, but his bass playing was not out front anymore, since that belonged to Ian.

The funny/weird thing about this band is that they added something to "flamenco" that was not visible in Spain ... the BASS GUITAR ... and it worked really well. A bit later, the "progressive music" coming out of Spain was more about the guitar playing its Spanish style, than it was a new arrangement of the flamenco, which CARMEN had given us. So, in a way, with Carmen falling apart we lost two things ... a wonderful modern interpretation of the flamenco and a wonderful rock band.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
