"The Art of Madness", by the Psychedelic Ensemble... "a 56-minute, continuous cycle of
songs, each based on a different manifestation of madness. The music tells the
story of an ordinary man who, without warning, experiences a psychotic Ecstasy.
The protagonist sees in the sky tears that turn to a light in which a vision of
a new art and music appears to him. His psychotic episodes prompt a course of
creative output in which the protagonist reproduces his flights of madness in
the form of art and music. The artist endures several psychotic experiences
that manifest as Panic, Fantasy, Dream, Delusion, Moon Mad, Despair and
Apparition. The artist then endures a Breakdown and Sedation. Finally, in a
moment of Revelation, the artist apprehends that the burden of his madness is,
in fact, a gift - the source of his exquisite creativity and artistic output.
Rather than suffer his madness, the artist triumphantly embraces that which
guides him through his extraordinary and distorted vision of the world." |

Til I Die, by the Beach Boys
A song wherein Brian Wilson acknowledges his helpless mental condition. I’m a leaf on a windy day Pretty soon I’ll be blown away How long will the wind blow? How long will the wind blow? Ohhh Until I die These things I’ll be until I die |

SO MANY!
Glad iamthemorning's Lighthouse was mentioned. T's albums seem to have a lot of it. Off the top of my head: TUNE's Lucid Moments is excellent (and eerie)! Mental dissonance seems to be what so much of prog is about--especially the modern heavy stuff. SYLVAN's Posthumous Silence could be another.

Mental Illness? Presumably Paranoid Schizophrenia , bi-polar condition , depression etc. It's funny in a way that no one has mentioned Paranoid by Sabbath. The lyrics are perfect but it's also just a great track!

Apparently "lead a normal life" by Peter Gabriel is about living in a mental institution. For example the lyrics "eating with a spoon they don't give you knives" is probably because they don't want you to hurt yourself or others.

Coming back to the subject of the thread, the songs that immediately springs to mind in terms of mental illness are "Suicide Solution" by Ozzy Osbourne and "Am I Going Insane" by Black Sabbath.

I like Tom Rapp too. I've listened to all ten of his albums, both solo and under the name Pearls Before Swine.
