I'm sure this has been recommended before, but still I feel this album has flown under the radar. To me it's one of the best prog albums of all time, and many times overlooked because people usually give Porcupine Tree props over Wilson's solo work. Whether it has gotten it's due recognition or not, if you have not added this to your collection then you're really missing out. A true journey of an album. |

I spin this album almost monthly, pretty much since it came out. I don't believe it has flown under the radar, the whole rock/prog/alternative music scene knows of this album. There are numerous reviews on many different music sites for it.
Clearly from a progressive view it is his best effort, about as complete an album he has ever recorded and that includes PT releases.

Although I prefer Hand Cannot Erase, Raven is a fine album. Hand and Raven are easily 1/2 for me in SW's post-PT discography

It was my entry point in SW/PT, although I got hooked on 90's PT right after. I still enjoy it very much, but Grace For Drowning is my favourite of his solo output these days.

The first four SW albums are all great and up there with the best PT albums imo. I would only put Deadwing ahead of it and maybe a tie with In Absentia. Probably many others would put Fear Of A Blank Planet ahead of it as well. Certainly it's the only time he came close to doing a symphonic prog album without becoming that well worn thing. As far as post 70's albums go there are maybe one or two I prefer over it but really not that many. Anathema's 'comeback' albums We're Here Because We're Here and Weather Systems might be two of them and perhaps the recent Waste Of Space Orchestra and All Traps On Earth releases as well but that might be it.

It is a superb album. Might spin it later, actually.

Great album but not unnoticed. Here are some bands/artists that are overlooked.
Sanguine Hum, Echolyn, Marco Minnemann, Mike Keneally, The Psychedelic Ensemble, Thank You Scientist, Nova Collective, Discipline, Frost*, Izz, Frogg Cafe, Hiromi, Phideaux, Special Providence, Thieves' Kitchen, Lonely Robot, FAT, Puppet Show, French TV, Bubblemath and countless others. SW is doing fine. |

Under the radar? Steven Wilson is all the prog community talks about. :)
Very good album.

It's about the album though and not so much the artist. There are plenty of great modern artists but can we place a single album by them above The Raven That Refused To Sing? Wilson didn't repeat this (maybe he just felt he had nailed it so why press 'repeat' anyway?) and Hand Cannot Erase perhaps suggested a new (commercial?) direction. Put some other 'masterpieces' out there to put up against it and lets see.

For me, it's the best Steven Wilson album, including the Porcupine Tree ones.

It's an excellent album, especially the title track (watch the Jess Cope video!) and I wouldn't say it's flown under the radar at all.

I haven't listened to this album (or Steven Wilson) in quite some time. I need to change that.
So much music, so little time.

Raven is my favorite solo Wilson by far, but I'd place it below my favorite two or three Porcupine Tree albums. It's definitely the album I'd recommend to anyone looking for the specific 70s prog sound, which I couldn't do for any of his other albums with PT or otherwise.
