I fully realize these are metal bands, but im interested to know from a proggressive fan's point of view which one they would prefer. to me the choice is obvious.

Metallica I guess, but I know less about Megadeth. I saw Megadeth years ago on the 'Peace sells' tour. It was probably the worst gig I ever went to.

Megadeth...The interplay between Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman (on those golden years) was mindblowing...

metallica... the first 4 albums were amazing.. the 5th was okay, then the rest was just plain crap

Megadeth was more reliable, but best album against best album, metallica wins it. But overall, Megadeth has more quality stuff than Metallica does.

So... My vote goes to...metallica!

Saw Metallica many times between '85 and '88, before they became a pop/grunge band.....they were SO good in the 80s..

Metallica definately.  I love Megadeth, and they are a little "sweeter" to my ear, but for structure, complexity and depth you have to go with classic Metallica.

Megadeth, specialy in "crypting writing". Metallica's best album is, obiusly, the black album  . But Megadeth had never decrise in their music.

Metallica's St.Anger is... C.R.A.P

Metallica.

However, I like them both the same. Both have been truly influential to me.

I said this before in a similar thread but I think Megadeth's Rust in Peace is a genuine prog metal classic.

But what about Peace Sells......  with Chris Poland on guitar?

Have you heard their newest "comeback" album The System Has Failed?

Chris Poland is back with the band for that album and Vinnie Coliatu plays drums on it.

From a prog point of view they both SUCK!
From a metal point of view I'd say Megadeth has had a more consistent career. Anyway, I've stopped listening to both bands a long time ago.

Metallica's first 4 albums are still very much of interest from a prog point of view, and the 5th one is to a lesser extent, as all 5 progressed metal as we knew it in the early 1980s into metal, prog metal as we know know it, and, of course, Nu-metal.

Their influence is not to be underestimated despite "Load" (of rubbish) "Reload" (of more rubbish) and St(upid) Anger, and the thrashing style that both bands brought to metal (courtesy of Metal Church, I believe) is never going to go away.

In Metallica's music especially, the careful use and development of the thrashing technique creates some amazing effects that go beyond the music itself - along the lines of what the polyrhythm brigade are trying to surpass today (but failing IMHO). If you simply listen to what they play, you will be disappointed and not hear anything but possibly aggressive and fast metal. If you listen to it in a similar way to the way that you look at a 3d picture, there is something unearthly and truly progressive there.

Megadeth were progressive, but from a technical standpoint, ie the technicalities in the music were more intricate than Metallica's, but the song writing and arrangements were actually fairly bog standard (at least, they are on the 3 Megadeth albums I know, which is all of the first 3). Megadeth's music does not contain so much of the "3d" effect, although it is there.

They also tended not to go for the longer songs and variety in composition that Metallica did, but instead opted for varying speeds from "Bloody fast" to "Sub-Blur". At least Metallica understood the value of "Reasonably slow", and showed this consistently on the first 4 albums.

So I vote Metallica - and I think they're definitely at least prog-metal related as they inspired the whole genre as we know it.

And that's not a very eloquent or convincing statement.

Can you elaborate?

Rust in Peace is good ... but not as ground breaking as Master of Puppets.
