I saw some cup
between the best nations from the different championships (the European
masters, African masters etc.) Pre-World Cup or something like that it
was called. I was very impressed by Dida, the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Excellent goalkeeping, good footwork, good eye for the game, etc. He is
one of the main reasons to why I think Brazil will take the WC next
year.

You know, I've never understood why "American" football hasn't really caught on elsewhere. It's not for lack of trying - the highest attendance ever at an "American football" game was actually in Mexico, and there have been games with more than 100,000 spectators in Japan and Europe as well. Tryouts in the European league routinely draw thousands of prospective players. The National Football League Hall of Fame has enshrined players from Bavaria, Guatemala, Norway, Italy, Honduras, Mexico, and of course Canada (where a very similar style of football has been played for over a hundred years). I don't hear lacrosse, baseball, or basketball referred to as "American" sports, although all of them originated over here as well.
I think it must be all the padding - people who haven't played the game just don't get that. Frankly, a lot of the various pads have come about over they years as a reaction to the number of players who were paralyzed or killed playing without them. It's still a very dangerous sport - my beloved Green Bay Packers have fully one-third of their roster injured this year, and there are still three games to go in the season.
Ah well, I'm going to go settle in with some popcorn (hmm, another American convention) and a Coke (hmmm), and watch some big guys in pads beat the hell out of each other now - San Diego Chargers and the undefeated Indianapolis Colts should be a good one to watch.

American football must be fun to play with its long periods of tension interspersed with ultra-intense moments... unfortunately I could never appreciate these elements as a spectator.

I like to see (and guess I understand the rules) American Football... here in Brazil (and several other countries) we play Rugby which IMO is tougher since players use no protection.
But see that way, in Soccer you have all players at the same time in the field... they don't go in and out according to the needs of the game. So, if Marino or Elway or Montana played soccer they had to face each other at the same time during the match! 
Another point, 90% of a Soccer game is played with the feet - the rudest part of the human body. It is a pleasure to see some guys (and girls too) control the ball using that sector of our body with accuracy - there is also some antropological discussion about the effects of the Industrial Revolution and the necessity of the workers to rest their hands while on leisure and so on.

any of these 3 should be on there instead of beckham IMO, much better players.

Not for the list yet, but the German members kow about the Peruvian Claudio Pizarro who has been elected the best forward of the last Champions League and a future top 10 Paolo Guerrero both from Bayern Munchen.
Also our friends from Holland know about another Peruvian Jefferson Farfán from PSV Eindhoven, this one could be a top 10 soon, he's only 21.

The only thing I know about soccer is that all the kids in the United States who play it have really annoying, right-wing neo-nazi mothers who drive Ford Escalades and other earth-raping-like SUVs  .
So how about this "footballer"? This guy kicked a 7 pound (3.2 kilo) egg-shaped ball through a goal that was 18 1/2 feet (5.6 meters) wide and 10 feet (3 meters) off the grond, from 63 yards (57.6 meters) away, with over a ton (1,000 kilos) of men (11 of them) running straight at him. And if that wasn't impressive enough, check out the picture carefully - the guy only has half a foot!
