Hello!

Okay, so I am searching for prog rock, made in the last say 10-15 years, that shamelessly rips off the 1968-1974 prog. NO new ideas, NO modern sound, NO modern synths... and by "modern" I mean 1978 and later (1975-1977 is a grey area Big smile )! Think of Astra - The Weirding, for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTE5DMFFU2c

Perfectly fine if it sounds not just retro, but even kinda lo-fi, like Astra. Preferably dark (i.e. closer to VDGG than Yes), spacey and with lots of mellotron and Hammond. But no psych jam bands please! Some improvisations here and there are more than fine, but not looking for bands like Earthless.

Just recommend me some retro goodness.

Thank you! Smile

Anglagard -hybris (1992) I'm not sure how shameless it is but it's definitely retro sounding(but in a good way).

Wobbler - "Rites at Dawn" and "From Silence to Somewhere". These two are frigging awesome. It's uncanny how 70s they sound.

Ok, my suggestion doesn't count since it wasn't made in the past 15 years or so but it's nonetheless worth hearing if you like retro sounding stuff. It's on the top 50 on progarchives for a reason.

Thanks, guys! I will definitely check these 3 albums.

The only reason I mentioned last 10-15 years is because this retro mania is relatively new in prog/psych rock, light doom metal etc.

Keep the recommendations flowing! Thank you :)

I don't think it's new in prog at all. The neo bands from the eighties were retro in a way. Anyway, even though it's out of print I recommend checking out Ad Infinitum from 1998 on youtube. The tracks "waterline" and "a winter's tale" from their sole album are on there.

Also, the band Moth Vellum(who only put out one album in 2008) might be up your alley.

Thanks, will check these ones as well.

I still think that the 80's neo bands sound like the 80's (not that I've listened to too many of them so you are probably right). Random example - Marillion's Grendel has too clear sound to be from 1972 for example, especially the drums and the synths. Ignoring the sound, it's very 70's in terms of composition.

Other than Astra, another new band whose retro sound I love, is The Future Kings Of England.

I wouldn't say TFKOE are new but they are newer. Unfortunately they broke up a few years ago.

well, you contradict yourself there, "shameless" retro prog sounds so negative, I was thinking you want a list of bands to avoid LOL and then you say "retro goodness". Confused LOL

Needlepoint
Zopp
White Willow
Anekdoten

The Tangent (they're really fun to listen to)
Maybe Echolyn

The Tangent and Anekdoten would have been my suggestions as well. Tremendous bands, love both a lot!

Mmmhh!!!... Lenny Kravitz is the pioneer in 70's retro sounds, with his debut album Let Love Rule (dating from 1990 - so that's 30 years ago).

That was a total revolution (especially that it sold well, too), as it was spitting on the 80's production values in the height of that damned bloody era.

NB  These two bands probably used some modern keyboards that emulate vintage sounds, rather than actual vintage gear, if you care about that. Personally I couldn't care less about it if the results sound good.

I will double down on the Wobbler recommendation, their album From Silence to Somewhere is truly amazing. Also, good time to become a fan because the new album comes out in 22 days.

I'll triple down on the "Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere" recommendation.
