After a recent Abacab poll I revisited all post-Hackett Genesis. I had recently revisited Rabin-era Yes and a couple of years ago I heard Camel for the first time and listened to all their releases, included its maligned Single Factor.

I arrived to the conclusion that although these three made some form of pop in the 80's, 90's, and beyond, I enjoyed Yes more than the other two.

What do you think?

(There was a thread covering this topic back in 2011, but didn't go too far. I wonder why.)

voted other because I think Queen did the best pop out of bands that started in the 70s.

^^ Queen sounds more like disco to me. I don't like anything even resembling disco.

Queen never did any disco, it was funk if you ask me.

^^ I stand corrected. Perhaps it's just that I don't like it.

Oh, Queen made some very disco-y things back in the 80s, which made me to hate them then. Until I listened to what they had done before...

But from these three, I have the impression that Genesis and Yes remained much more in the rock realm (be it pop-rock, if you wish), whereas Camel really had some pop leanings with their Single Factor and Stationary Traveller... That said, it is all very relative and I prefer Yes. Tongue

I like Disco music generally, but I didn't like Queen's Hot Space album, seeing as they're a Rock band, and not a Disco Dance band. Smile

I voted for Yes in this poll though,  primarily for my two favourite "poppy" Yes  albums: Talk (1994) and The Ladder (1999). Thumbs Up

Probably Genesis. The so called pop period by Yes was more like pop rock and that's not really the same thing.

I wonder what songs people say are disco with Queen.

Another One Bites the Dust, Staying Power, Back Chat, Dancer and Cool Cat are all funk.
Fun It is also funk.

If I wanted a funky dance album, I wouldn't buy Queen's Hot Space album. I'd buy an Earth, Wind & Fire album instead - and I have, several times. Smile

except that EW&F went full disco. That's the difference.

Supertramp. Breakfast in America is a perfect example of very good pop.

definitely Genesis from this list, I remember when 'Back in NYC' was regularly played on the radio as popular music

I'm a huge Yes fan and I probably like them the best but I voted for Genesis this time. Genesis did lots of pop and they did it well.

Camel always had melodies that could move me, even when they went pop.
