You can put together a progressive rock band with whomever and however many members you want but they cant be from the same band. (all members in their prime of course)
Ive been thinking about this and personally id pick David Gilmour on guitar, Kit Watkins on Keyboards, Terry Bozzio on drums and finally Paul McCartney on bass. I can see Gilmour and Watkins together making some epic instrumental tracks, to complement Watkins keyboards i picked Bozzio on drums and then McCartney for occasional vocals and his catchier songwriting. Happy the man meets pink floyd with a touch of the psychedelic beatles.

Welcome to PA! We used to play these mind-games in college in the 1970s, when our errrr....thinking was a bit murky!
We once mused about Bob Fripp joining Yes, only to later find out that he WAS solicited for the guitarist slot! I love the unconventional/unknown, so I'd like John Hawken of the Strawbs on keys....the late Gary Strater of Starcastle (friend of mine) on bass guitar....the remarkable Bill Bruford on the drum....and the incomparable Daryl Stuermer on guitar! Daryl will rejoin Genesis on their upcoming geezer-tour! Vocals? A woman would be nice for a change...Christina Booth of Magenta would be nice!

To begin with, usually my first mention is the Yes line-up from CttE... I can't really think of a way to improve on that one. Now, I have thought of several line-up that I have thought might have done really interesting things, but the only one member per band restriction makes it a bit difficult. One possibility can be:
- Vocals: Peter Hamill and / or Janis Joplin. - Guitars: Robert Fripp and / or Jimi Hendrix. - Keyboards: Keith Emerson. - Flute: Ian Anderson. - Sax: David Jackson (which gives trouble with Peter Hamill). - Violin: David Cross (which gives trouble with Robert Fripp). - Bass: Chris Squire and / or Tony Levin and / or John Wetton (both of which would give trouble with Fripp and Cross). - Drums: Bill Bruford and / or Carl Palmer (this ones are hopeless, though). |

Hi,
Welcome. In all actuality, and history has shown this, the only way to get "new" and "progressive" is with new and fresh blood. You can not "recreate" the past any more than you can invite a future with the present players ... they simply do not listen or study new things ... just different licks on their instruments. All new people ... no one well known. Make them all 16 and against the very fiber of society that is pop music and let's see what they will do. Also keep music teachers "away" from telling them they have to do this and that and a circle of bum notes of some kind ... open it all up so it includes and uses other diverse thoughts and ideas in music from other parts of the world. It has been done in theater ... and it works ... but we define "music" as STRICTLY a top ten environment ... not anything else ... thus, the idea that we have to have 16 year old unknowns ... and say ciao baby to everyone else and anyone associated and related to the old guard! It's a new time and place ... and the youngsters deserve their chance ... we're the tired old generation and these choices only affirm what we know ... tired ... old ... inflexible ... and the same old song!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I would have Steven Wilson, Nick Beggs, and Jamie Muir, as a bombastic avant-prog trio!

For those of you picking Squire and Bruford, Squire and Wakeman, Bruford and Wakeman - the OP says they can't be from the same band.

I can't imagine what that would sound like either, but the guitars would be interesting at least. Not sure what Entwhistle will sound like after you've dug him up though.

No question for me that this would be a band led by a female singer, either Kate Bush or Bjoerk. Everybody wants to hire Bruford, fair enough, but I can't help, I just like him and I think he'd work well here. I also love to hear Richard Sinclair's contribution here. On keyboards somebody with an avantgarde composer's background like Irmin Schmidt will contribute big time, the singing bandleader lady (no matter which one) will like this. I need to consult with the other musicians about the guitarist. Do they want the super experimental approach (Fred Frith), some more jazz influence (Kraan's Peter Wolbrandt) or the melodic direction (Gilmour or Oldfield). I think I send them Wolbrandt and see what they make of it. And as a surprise guest I have Didier Malherbe (which stopped me from hiring Moerlen on drums; I could also imagine Andy Ward or Latimer in the band, but then I can't have Sinclair).
