One suggestion is to actually get this thing to work properly.  I decided to try it out, so I went to the Marillion page.  Ten minutes later, I'm still waiting for the playlist to load.  So I'm definitely not in favour of this new approach

I agree... it dosent work properly as it is... also many ppl including myself that uses thiis site rely on dialup... using dialup to stream means that the down load speed is not able to allow you to play the song as it... You listen to a 20 second segment after about a 30-60 second download, and then the sequence begins again... Most of the prog bands i like (as well as the kraut rock) are from the more mainstream arena (u know... Pink floyd, Hawkwind, Yes, et al) and i want to hear what the more obscure bands sound like.  I do not have the money to get broadband, or to buy albums 'blind' solely upon the introductory explanation of the bands music, and the reviews on the albums themselves (different ppl have different opinions).  Because of this, i would like to listen to some music, even if it only one song, so that i can decide whether to part with my hard earned money to get such a treasure.  These mp3s have already possessed me to have bands like can and gentle giant in my cd collection, something that would not have happened otherwise.

Sure the improvements will make it a bit better for some ppl to listen to the music (see above... what IS going to happen to us dial up ppl), but its not the same, and it appears to be due to corproate greed.

Besides, I thought this site was meant to promote progressive music and the artists that perform them, NOT the record companies that have made it quite clear that the short term 'buck' is more important than the music they produce.  Also, with their behaviour with charging some ppl over having recorded music, why give them respect... Of course if the artist protests, then fair enough.  But all of the complaints that I have heard (except the famous one where mettallica sued napster) have been due to companies... I want progarchives to continue, as it has brought greater attention to the music, but how do i know what i am buying.

Not   happy!!!

And that's exactly why record companies don't like the practice; if we downloaded every MP3 available from this site, we'd have no reason to buy CDs for a while... no sheckels going into the already overstuffed corporate coffers, but also no sheckels into artists' pockets.

That said - if you use MP3s to sample a band, then go out and shell out your hard-earned to get the CDs, MP3s can only be a good thing; record companies should see them as they are - generally, free advertising.

Right - all this sitting on the fence is makin' the old bum sore:

I WANT THE MP3s BACK!

Ok man, you live in United States, am i wrong? ok, i live in the
world's ass, Argentina. The only way to get rare albums is buying in
the internet, and that makes it four times more expensive. So what
shall i do? the answer is very simple: Download.

Yes but than surely you wouldn't be using ProgArchives as your primary
downloading source I'm assuming.

The first suggestion would be to add some whole streaming-albums...

Is that asking too much?... it probably is... sorry...

Streaming is, de facto, "too" bad. There iis no way for anyone to skip to a certain point (time) in any given song. I cannot critically analyze something over progarchives.com before I buy it now. Also many people desire to save an mp3 or two onto their computer for whatever reason... can't anymore though. Thanks streamers.

Well if it is between that and closing the site down?   God, I would hate to be without PA.

Okay mister five stars, you are right about keeping PA up, even if it means streaming/not downloading. But have you ever seen streamers that let you seek to a certain time in the song? That would solve my problem I just cried about entirely, except not being able to save. I can deal with that. As of now I'm annoyed.

i have a lot of stuff i downloaded a year ago from here, but i've not got anything that's been added in the last year :(

i prefer the mp3s to be honest. i also think that if you're gonna stream the music now, rather than let people download, you should make a 'progarchives' radio - where people can see ALL songs available on the site on 1 page and play what they want without having to browse artist pages

plus, isn't this new way gonna vastly increase the sites bandwidth...?

edit:

also, can you make the stream player show you how far through the song you are?

Yes, we the ones who have internet dialup are going listen to the  progarchives songs by part.

A 7 minute song would last 20 minutes or more.......

I just made a poll up on that very issue here:

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12566& amp;PN=1

I think the record companies need to know this especially the second level ones that cater to prog music.  This site is their friend not their enemy.

Well, I for one am a musician and I have MP3s posted on the site, I am a little disappointed that they are down, because I feel that in this type of music many of the songs require repeated listenings to fully take effect.

I certainly have downloaded MANY songs from here and put them on CDs to listen to and ended up buying many CDs by artists I did not know after hearing the songs and getting to like the music.
