My favourite trio is probably Radian (not on PA). I also love the two mentioned Tangerine Dream trios and Schnellertollermeier. From the list Aristocrats.

Usually I prefer quartets to trios, at least in rock music, because it allows a more nuanced soundscape. There are lots of great jazz trios though, but jazz works differently. If I were to pick one, it would probably be Cream.

Animals As Leaders - melodic and complex metal , lovely!
The magic of the trio always stands up for me even beyond prog Placebo (one of the best indie bands ever imo) The Police (so inventive) Primus (mad as it gets!) Muse (they rock!) there have been loads of great prog trios that are mainly ELP wannabies but I still enjoy them , especially Gerard (Live In Marseilles) Ars Nova (Book of The Dead and Android Domina albums) Triumvirat (Illusions on a Double Dimple) UK (Danger Money) Rick Wakeman (tried hard most of the time to avoid comparisons with ELP but his link up with Chris Squire and Alan White on Criminal Record is amongst his best stuff imo)
