Relayer, but I notice a glimpse of contest here.

Red is a masterpiece from the beginning to the end.

As much as I love Relayer, Red is my favorite King Crimson album and one of my top 10 prog albums in general; so I've gotta go with the latter. Now, if this was against Close to the Edge instead, it would be much tougher to decide between the two.

Although Providence is a dreadful bore, there are better compositions on Red overall.

I voted Relayer, just because of Gates of Delirium... but now I'm not so sure, because overall Red is a better album, and Starless is just as brilliant as the single outstanding song, even though I prefer it live (however, that's just the same for Gates).

I'm obsessed with Red (my vote) and still haven't got through all that box set which is my most expensive music purchase ever. Relayer has the magnificent Gates but the rest I don't care for much.

Red is good, but Relayer wipes the floor with it in all capacities IMHO. Note for note, track for track, second by second.
Red also has horrible mastering and volume EQ working against it for me. Also a few boring tracks that kill the pacing and displace the opener and closer tracks for me.

Lol - where were all their fans back in 74? Deserting them, that's what!

Well, wasn't that their worst performing album of the 70s (apart from their live albums) - so people had stopped buying their stuff? Their first two were top 10 but went down after...

I've never heard or read anything about that. Red is also one of their most popular albums these days, so I don't know. That's why I asked.

Red was their lowest charting album in the 70's, reaching number 45 in the UK. Surprising, I think.
Their highest charting album was ITWOP reaching number 4 in the charts (ITCOTCK got to 5) According to Wikipedia. |

My CD has excerpts of some of the newspaper/zine reviews of the album from back then and they were pretty mixed. The critics pretty much missed the bus with this one.
