I'm aware some of these songs have rubbed many people the wrong way over the years. "Too much self-pity" or "Too Neil Diamond" are the complaints that are often heard. Some have stood the test of time, while others were dropped and forgotten almost immediately. Now that it's been almost 5 years since Greg has passed, I'm really interested to see which of these is the fans' favorite.
For myself, I'm going with "C'est La Vie". It was the first of these five I ever heard, and while it's often compared with "Still You Turn Me On", it's more serious and poignant. "Closer to Believing" is a close second.

I haven't listened to the Works albums in a long time, a bit of a chore to listen as they are quite uneven.

Still I don't see a man in a mansion
That an accurate pen won't puncture Go to town, go to hell, go to jail. And there's bars and saloons Where the jukebox plays blues in the night Till the madman says "Son, Time to go we could both use some light" And thy will be done. |

Lake proved to be a balladeer at heart. Voted for C'est La Vie.

C'est La Vie. The only song that I really like of him on that album.

C'est La Vie is a masterpiece, but I like the whole Works. It's not Tarkus, but I think it's very underrated.

Good poll, Steve! I'll go with Hallowed'. Really like the arrangement, and Lake is in fine form.

Me too. One of my favorite songs. The lyrical puns and word play border on incredible.

Easily the worst of the 'solo' sections on the Works Vol 1 album. Voted for Hallowed Be Thy Name which I genuinely adore for its acerbic lyric and neurotic glissando string arrangement. The other four make Neil Sedaka sound like Black Metal.
