A No Fly Zone over Ukraine? Discuss.

There shouldn't be anything TO discuss. Enforcing a no-fly zone means shooting down Russian aircraft and that means starting a direct conflict with NATO nations.
Don't get wrong here. I think it's what Russia deserves, to be blown out of the sky for this abomination. But I just can't see it ending well for the rest of Europe once the first MIG was toasted.
And numbnuts Lindsay Graham is a total tool for saying out loud what we all thought, someone needs to feed Vlad a hot lead sandwich. Inside voice Lindsay, inside voice.

So someone votes YES and then leaves no comments on why they feel that way?
Pussy !

Ok, maybe a little harsh on the afterthought, but at the very least...Explain your rational and what you see as the consequences of such an act.

Yeah. As much as I would like to establish a no fly zone, that basically means shooting down russian planes and that basically means a full on WWIII. It does suck for the Ukraine, and I completely understand why they would want us to enforce one but...

Never thought I'd quote anything from Family Guy in this context but I suspect it's paraphrased from either Ralph Waldo Emerson or Machiavelli? 'If you hit the King you better kill the King' Voted No.

Yea does not take a 2nd grade education to understand what would happen. Although, if a ban is put in place all that might happen is the violations would be brought up to NATO and UN as further reasons to cut off Russia from the rest of the world.
Every country with nukes would have to press the launch button at the same time to annihilate Russia with no chance for them to retaliate....ain't gonna happen

If you institute a "no fly zone", than somebody has to enforce the no-fly zone. NATO and America would have to shoot down any aircraft from the ground or with aircraft of their own.  That would immediately start war between NATO and Russia.  After the rest of the treaties kick in, you'd have a World War on your hands.

I don't see how competent NATO could be about Ukrainian skies., whether civil/commercial or military flights, especially if they refuse to intervene after flexing its muscle andbluffing at the poker game and losing face towards its opponent.

I think the plane shot down over the Donbass some 6 years ago would have most commervial airlines avoiding Ukraine and the whole area for a while? After all, it only took a cheap Dutch (there is a neoplasmLOL) airline trying to save up fuel/money flying over a war zone to teach a good lesson to everyoneStern SmileGeek

Voted "No" because a no fly zone risks escalation that could be very hard to control

However, this is what we must do IMO:

If Putin attacks a NATO member then there must be no backing off, even if Putin starts waving his nukes around. If we back off then the West is finished.

We need to get Sweden and Finland into NATO as soon as possible

We need to protect Moldova now. Lukashenko gave the game away that the original plan was for Russian tanks to keep rolling into Moldova and Putin would still like to do it

We need to supply Ukraine with the weapons it needs. Germany sending obsolete Soviet era weapons, many of which don't even work, is an embarrassment

Finally, if we won't enforce a no fly zone, then we need to train Ukrainian pilots (lots of them) and provide the aircraft so that Ukraine can defend its own skies

I'd say No. It would be fine if all the parties involved would stay behind their own fences and restrain their itches for expansion. As far as I know (not much, I admit), neither the NATO nor Russia has to search anything there.

On the other hand, it has already been risky to fly over Ukraine since 2014 (the MH17 disaster).

I really don't know... Morally, I would say "yes", because it is hard to abandon the Ukrainians to this aggression. Politically and strategically, I would say "no", because it would probably trigger a 3rd World War, which we will eventually get to anyway if Putin isn't stopped. Putin should be eliminated, at least politically, maybe physically. The best to do this are the Russians themselves.
I tend to favour moral considerations, but in this case it might cause many more innocent deaths with a moron like Putin on the opposite side, already putting nuclear option into play...

Why this thread? The no-fly zone has been in place even before the hostilities began : according to a few expert and highly knowledgeable commentators/critical thinkers on the current "war" or "special operation" on this site, the bellicose, warmongering and brutal NATO is the cause of this catastrophe , as its really NATO"s super stealth (read totally invisible, like in Hollywood movies) air forces which are attacking the brave Russian liberators with callous disregard for collateral damages! NATO, according to the same sources, is not a defensive, legal alliance but the real belligerents here, the ones who started all this mess. (coughs loudly) . Putin is showing remarkable restraint in "denazifying and stabilizing" Ukraine (aka the Real Russia), knowing full well, who the real aggressor organization is. Confused
