Hehe, I guess you enjoyed it! But you must know that there's lots and lots and lots of nice and lush guitar work in their subsequent albums, so just go that way if you want more of it. |

One of my favourite tracks, ever.
Went to see them many, many years ago. They didn't play it live. Mutter mutter. In fact, I've just stuck it on again whilst I'm supposed to be working. Thanks for the reminder. ;-) Edited by Davesax1965 - June 13 2022 at 04:33 |

The Market Square Heroes single/ep was the first thing I heard by Marillion. Grendel just blew me away.
I actually prefer it to that other famous epic to which it is often, quite inappropriately, compared.

^ Yes, I got that when it came out. I saw them a lot between 82 and 86 and they never played it live. Lost interest once Fish left...

Seriously fellas, I've been scratching my head, wondering what on earth people could possibly compare it to? Anyone care to enlighten me?

^ I would assume since Fish era Marillion sounds like Genesis they are referring to 'Suppers Ready'.

It's bugger all like it. It has always been an extremely annoying trope.

Yeah, great song. I just got it a few months ago in a compilation of singles from the band, and I was really missing on it.

The comparison is weak I agree, but to be expected; a long track by a band clearly influenced by early Genesis, and of course Grendel does have that section which is reminiscent of the 9/8 section of Suppers Ready. Beyond that..? Nah. It's entirely Marillion's own creation. |

Ive had another listen to this song again, and im going to have to say, i think the first half of the song is better than the second half. But of course, the last 60 seconds of the song are the best.

One of my most listened to prog 'epics', certainly. I don't much like the book it's based on but that wouldn't be the first time I've enjoyed a piece of music inspired by less-than-impressive literature. As much as I prefer Fish-era's more populist records, their early indulgences in progressive rock traditionalism at the outset are a good reminder of why that stuff got its following in the first place.
Even if some of the synth tones haven't aged spectacularly. Love, DreamTechPlus.
