Scarcity are an American atmospheric black metal duo from Brooklyn, New York, formed by composer and multi-instrumentalist Brendon Randall-Myers. A guitarist in math-rock band Marateck, Randall-Myers took over the Glenn Branca Ensemble in the wake of the maestro's death, and channelled Branca's microtonal guitarwork and unusual tunings for Scarcity's atypical totalist black metal.

Grieving over the sudden loss of his aunt and a close friend in 2019, Randall-Myers began writing the music that would eventually take shape as Scarcity, refining the project while under lockdown in Beijing in early 2020 and completing it upon returning to Brooklyn as COVID-19 began to ravage North America. Randall-Myers invited his friend Doug Moore (of Pyrrhon, Seputus and Weeping Sores) to provide vocals and lyrics for the band, with Moore no stranger to the trauma of the pandemic, living next to a mortuary as the virus swept through New York City. Through The Flenser, Scarcity released their debut LP, Aveilut, in summer 2022, its title the Hebrew term for bereavement and one of the first extreme metal albums to directly confront the impact of the global coronavirus crisis.

The label compares Scarcity to Krallice, Jute Gyte, Ehnahre and Mare Cognitum, and further references to Liturgy, Victory Over the Sun and Blut aus Nord are also appropriate.

Randall-Myers is/was also one of the guitarists in Real Loud and composed my favourite song on their self-titled album. I can definitely hear the Branca influence. I'll need to check out this project of his.
