I recommend this Indonesian band, that has only one album.

The informations below were taken from a youtube channel called Proclaro Jaya, on which the album can be found. I made some attempts to purchase this CD, but I still didn’t get it.

NERV is a band from Bandung that plays the fusion of Sundanese ethnic music, pop & progressive rock. The band consists of Nia (electric accoustic violin), Ajey DK (drums, jimbe, harp, bamboo flute, vocals), Dicky (bass), Yusak (guitar, keyboards), Jantan (drums) and Tendy (guitar). The album was issued by Indonesian Progressive Society label, the same label as DISCUS.

This album is characterized by sounds of Indonesian indigenous ethnic elements such as gamelan & kendang, dynamic beats, exotic melodies, viola in celtic traditional style, world music & new age feels, symphonic elements, the distortioned twin guitars and so forth.

Tracklist:

1. Ragam (9:20)

2. Pasir (6:25)

3. 1965 (11:55)

4. Siapa Aku (6:45)

5. Karuhun (12:25)

6. Sekelumit Problema (6:10)

7. Saat Terakhir (3:15)

Ahead is my analysis of each track.

First track starts with a flute, and what seems to be a sitar, both showing elements from middle east folclorical music. Atabaques come along. After this brief introduction, battery and synths already burst into a symphonic prog vein. Flute and guitar gets a little heavier. Through its 9min length, this track is very representative of this album’s proposal. Constant changes of harmonies and rythms, violin appears constantly, transiting between middle east music and the influence of some prog rock violinists (I listen Kansas and Darryl Way sometimes). Batterist shows energy of a rocker, but also the technique of a jazz man who also knows how to get groovy.

Second track starts with atabaques. By the way, a constant on the album, but most of the time located on background. Guitar and violin offers some pleasent long and lyric notes. The last one is definitely the star of the track. Synths garantuee a prog feeling. And here is the first time of a few that they improve some vocals typical of the middle east culture. The composition here is more calm.

Dynamic is the way third track begins, and the violin shines again, with intricate and enchanting harmonies. Bassist gets more space, and does a great job setting the pace, but also on the melodies. Synths are always there but not on the front page.

On fourth track very lyrical tunes from violin, with contributions of guitar, are played with a calm and jazzy drum. Sometimes the rhythm gets a little faster, but not so much. making this music another example of the more quiet side of this album.

Fifth track brings some vocals in excellent harmonies, which are rare on the album. To be more accurate, the vocals are the central part of this composition until the 3rd minute. Then a heavier symphonic prog gets along. Guitar and bass assumes a more rhythmic drive, a very important characteristic of this track, which is the longest one of the album.

Bells promote a very melodic introduction to the sixth track. But soon the execution gets heavier and more complex. This composition has an avant-gardé or eclectic touch. Some vocals are sustained by atabaques, but here they are more emotional.

The last and shortest track is a celebration of joy. The piano and violin provides good riffs, as well as the guitar player.

This is a symphonic prog effort with middle east influences.

They certainly existed, and their album can still be purchased via a couple of Japanese on line record stores.

They have links to another pretty decent Indonesian progressive rock band called Makara via Kiki Caloh, who was the bass player with another of the Indonesian Progressive Society label's bands called Discus (mentioned in the OP, and which has appeared several times at international progressive rock festivals in Europe and America), and a member of the 'mark 2' Makara line up. Kiki Caloh was an in-house lawyer who graduated from the UI Faculty of Law, who Makara's vocalist Kadri Mohamad knew when he was with the Brawijaya band, and who was active with their drummer Andy Julias in the management of the IPS organization. Kiki joined Makara after original bassist Januar Irawan had to resign due to health conditions. Makara is a progressive rock band originally formed in Jakarta in 1980 by a group of students who met at the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia, Rawamangun Campus. There was a 'mark 1' line up from 1980-1987, the 'mark 2' line up (with Kiki Caloh) existed from 2001-2008, and we now have the current 'mark 3' line up, which was formed in 2021.

Apart from playing bass, Kiki Caloh was also involved in recording production activities. Kiki was the executive producer of the second Discus album as well as the Nirmana album from Cozy Street Corner, and the music producer of Nerv (who are described as a progressive pop rock group from Bandung led by a female violinist). Kiki's playing style was heavily influenced by several musical genres, but he was particularly inspired by bands such as King Crimson and Genesis. Kiki Caloh died in 2015.

The Nerv 'Ragam' CD was released in 2005, and is available at the following links:

Nerv, and a couple of other Indonesian Progressive Society bands, are discussed in the German 'CD Kritik Progressive Newsletter' Nr.54 (dated 01/2006): https://www.betreutesproggen.de/pnl/index.htm?/pnl/pnl54.htm

Here is Google's translation of the article:

"Discus bassist Kiki Caloh produces young bands for the Indonesian Progressive Society from the suddenly burgeoning prog scene. As Iwan Hasan said in an earlier interview and as some band members said during their presence in Würzburg for the concert at the AKW, there were already the first traces of progressive rock in Indonesia in the 80s, but it was the worldwide success of Discus that washed away great interest in progressive music upwards. The "Indonesian Progressive Society" was founded to hold the scene together and expand it. Since then there have been growing opportunities for bands and fans to indulge in their style. Sony Music Indonesia handles the distribution of the releases, so the CDs can be found in the relevant stores throughout Indonesia. And as different as prog rock is worldwide, it's logically the same in Indonesia.

In Memoriam they play Prog Metal with a strong ethnic influence, very heavy and powerful and cannot be compared to any well-known band. Modern rock and pop can be found in the songs as well as symphonic structures. Apparently the album "The ultimate terrorizing aura of unlogic mind" is a rock opera, the title suggests it, the songs flow into each other accordingly. The pieces are played technically excellent, the arrangements a bit unusual at first, then all the more interesting. The rock part far outweighs the ethnic influences, so the electric guitar and keyboards are constantly at work like crazy. The structures of the tracks are constantly dissolving, are pumped up again, only to silt up again. The melodic events are very dynamic. According to Kiki, the lyrics, sung in Bahasa (Indonesian), deal critically with equal rights for women, arrogance, power and terror.

On their debut "The evolution ethnic - Slebar Slebor" Anane play folk songs on rock. That sounds very humorous, really weird and has a tendency towards rock in opposition and jazz rock. In addition to rock instruments, the 9-piece band plays a lot of ethnic instruments, especially percussion. Main melodic instruments are electric guitar and tenor saxophone. The arrangements of the pieces are very exuberant, downright euphoric. The band knows how to play grandiose noise, backed by constant drum rhythms and percussion. This is hard on the ears, but also on the legs and entertains with funny motifs. The songs are mostly over 10 minutes long, the boldness and crazy speed of the rhythms can probably overwhelm friends of harmonic sounds. If you get involved, the songs are immense fun with their wildness, speed and a sloppiness in terms of arrangement, which has an extremely good effect. The band doesn't just play ultra-fast songs, they also interpret melancholic tunes in their own way. Always on the carpet of ethnic rhythms, which doesn't make the songs sound psychedelic, a strong folk flair develops, especially in "Perueren", the melodic one hard to grasp for European ears. "Ho Ho Hi Heh" leans the most in the direction of Rock In Opposition, what an imaginative, unusual piece of music that manically combines jazz rock, symphony, free rock and folk, sounds like a voodoo dance and is completely captivating. At the end of the CD there is "Ho Ho Hi Heh" again as a remix. Rock and ethnofolk flow together in psychedelic techno, you don't need drugs anymore, the music is the drug!

Nerv begin their CD psychedelic. Flute and guitar weave an epic motif that grows into hard rock and eventually morphs into symphonic rock. Nerv also combine progressive rock with ethnic sounds, albeit a lot less than Anane. It's amazing how many typical elements the musicians have absorbed from the European Prog scene, a lot can be recognized in their songs. Keyboard tones, harmonies, the sound of the electric guitar, the rhythm. Nevertheless, the band's music can only be compared to common prog structures insignificantly. The uniqueness of the band lies in the harmonic structures, the sequence of melodies, the "peculiar" changes of topic, the many surprises. Nothing happens in hectic or stress, the band takes their time and weaves delicate motifs. The songs have long preludes that gracefully lead into the piece without necessarily fitting melodically. Nerv give the electric and acoustic violin a lot of space, the songs are melancholic and tedious, relaxed and spherical, and suddenly erupt into hard rock. A fondness for Kansas can be heard without the band making it too clear. Great album that takes you to a distant world. The fourth band also relies on long tracks. "Z's diary" is a lyrically coherent work that, like the other bands, also combines ethnic music and progressive rock, but leans furthest towards symphonic rock. Keyboards and electric guitar (the latter with a leaning towards Allan Holdsworth) create the bombastic motifs. The harmonic structure is reminiscent of the first album by the Hungarians Solaris, who spiced up symphonic sounds with hard guitars. In Memoriam and Nerv have a lot of lyrics in their songs, while Anane and Imanissimo work mostly instrumentally.

Imanissimo is the band that plays structures that are easiest to understand for European ears. Massive mountains of keyboards, heavy drumming and heavy guitars create "typical" symphonic rock. That sounds very inspired and is by no means as badly played and produced as some European or South American productions. The band doesn't hold back, doesn't pretend to be "sophisticated". It's pretty hard sometimes, goes into jazz rock, creates psychedelic moments and exhausts ethnic motifs. The guitars sometimes sound a lot like Dream Theater, without Imanissimo otherwise being comparable to the band. The 4 CDs show that there is a new scene growing from which much can be expected. Discus themselves will not be coming up with a new album at the end of 2006, as they told me as a joke, but already in autumn 2005. Hopefully the scene will remain active and interested, this will give the incestuous rest the necessary fresh cell treatment.

The history of Makara can be found here: https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makara_(grup_musik).
And in quite a bit more detail here: http://indorockstar.blogspot.com/2009/01/makara.html.

Here is an arlequins.it (an Italian progressive rock webzine dedicated entirely to Progressive Rock, and which pays special attention to bands in the underground scene) interview with Andy Julias. He is the boss of the Indonesian Progressive Society (IPS), producer of many bands (Discus, Makara, Vantasma, Imanissimo, Ballerina, Anane, In Memoriam), and the leader of Makara: http://www.arlequins.it/pagine/articoli/corpointerviste.asp?chi=245.

This is a brief extract from it, explaining a bit more about what the Indonesian Progressive Society does for the music scene in that country:

"In 2000 and 2001, IPS held the first and second Progressive Festival, and they were very successful. And they were followed by several Prognites, which were a little bit smaller in scale compared to Prog Fest. Since 2001 we always have the Prognites every 3 months and the audience is good. Prog Fest have given birth to some prog bands such as: In Memoriam, Imanissimo, Anane, Nerv, Ballerina, Vantasma, etc. IPS started to be a recording division and produced and released several albums (ten albums) including Makara and Discus. IPS works together with some radio stations, and have a special program every Saturday with RPK FM station named “Progressive Weekend” and Friday only once/month, and the name of the show is Prog The Nite with Pro 2 FM. Last but not least, the name of our label is IPS Records."

You can listen to Makara's 2008 album 'Maureen', which IPS released, below. Maureen is a concept album, which is a record with a continuous list of tracks within a story. 'Maureen' is told as the story of a woman on Senggigi beach, Lombok, exposed to foreign cultures and traveling the world. She intends to return to the village and dedicate herself to building her village, but the stereotype that women should not be advanced and smart hinders her. She then becomes depressed and decides to end her life.

And that's all I could find.... Embarrassed
