Not a "real" musical family... like gigging musicians... just people who
loved music and dabbled with instruments. My grandfather was a
professional musician - played in a ragtime band and an orchestra, but
not enough to support his family with. Music was pretty important in our
family and my parents would be blasting music (yes, blasting!) on the
stereo on the weekends. This was in the 60s and 70s. People listened to
music more back then - less tv, no internet...etc...
Plus, I'm the youngest... so older siblings always playing stuff it was hard not to get into. That was my introduction to Yes... my oldest sister had the Roundabout single. I was always seeking "undiscovered" music... underground, unknown stuff... so I'd flip over my siblings' singles and listen to the other side. Lots of gems on those flipsides Edited by Progkast - February 06 2023 at 06:56 |

e. 50-60
I'm 51 years old, having discovered Prog (though not knowing what it was called) in the early days of MTV with Peter Gabriel, Asia, Genesis, Yes... I'm a musician as well. |

I turn 70 this month. Have loved prog since 1971, though it was often referred to as Art Rock back then. Still enjoy hearing new symphonic and folk prog.

I turn 53 next month. I'm always curious about people who are my age (or close to it) who are prog fans and when they got into prog. The 80s was a strange time to get into prog. Not only did I get into it then but I also discovered the "underground" and lesser known bands before the end of that decade. I sometimes feel like an anomaly. Sure there's folks around my age who were into Pink Floyd, Rush and maybe Genesis and Yes but did they also know King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Camel, Marillion, etc?

^ Steve, I believe this is a misunderstanding of yours. There were given the age categories on the first page and they are represented by the letters from A to H. I checked the previous pages and saw no replies of you, which means you're "new" here and your miscomprehension is understandable.
You gotta be a G, BTW. In two senses. |

b) I am 22 now. My first exposure to this wonderful world was with 15. I can relate to the gateway argument in that sense. My openings were Muse, Radiohead, Tool, (a bit Pt but only the 2000s) and the poppier Genesis and Yes Albums of my Dad. A big problem with this site and prog in general has always been its elitism that stems from a mindset thats also quite pervasive in classical whilst that style of music ironically is also excluded from many proggers minds as worthwhile. I understand pedros wish for some fresh ideas in the prog scene and in that sense also a rejuvenilisation (is that a word?) of the forum. At least on an artistic level. Oh and btw listen the new bubblemath. Its hot..
