Seeing the photo that 'Heart of the Matter' posted in tribute to Ray Shulman (RIP) reminded me that i kinda had a thing for bassists who also played Violin or Mandolin..
I'm thinking of (apart from Ray), Rick Grech from Family and then John Weider who replaced him (and had played with Eric Burdon and the Animals previously. Also, Rod Clements from Lindisfarne. I'm sure there must be others, particularly outside the UK... any ideas?

Almost forgot. Andre Beller, who played the bass in Minibosses also plays bowed string instruments. |

I saw this guy with the band "Oregon," he played upright bass, AND he played violin (holding it in his lap, playing it like a tiny double bass!)
Amazing show! I walked past Colin Wolcott on the way to the loo but didn't recognize him, he gave me a nice smile!! RIP Colin!

Jannick Top is one heck of a bassist who also plays cello, not sure about violin/viola though.

Fred Frith played bass on the final Henry Cow album and with Naked City, despite his main instruments being violin and guitar. I suppose that counts?

Some great answers!! I should have also included Cello.. I guess we are getting into the realms of multi instrumentalists of which there are many, many talented ones all across the world!

Ric Grech, bassist for Family, Blind Faith and Traffic (he got around), did some fiddling for Fairport Convention before Dave Swarbrick became a full time member.

Stanley Clarke uses both electric bass guitar, and upright bass (if that counts, being part of the strings family, like viola and cello).

I don't think anyone comes close to the late, great Ray Shulman. An astonishingly brilliant musician.
RIP.

Can I add to your list the multi-instrumentalist Steve Unruh of which I have two albums released in 2005 and 2007 ?
He plays all instruments including bass and violin ? |
