Very sad news for anyone who knows the brilliant Irish band Horslips, the founders of Celtic Rock.
Johnny Fean, the guitarist through most of their recording life, passed away yesterday. He was a truly inspiring guitarist and also played the Ullleann pipes and banjo. I saw Horslips very many times and they were always astonishing. I also sat with them for a meal at the Dundee Univ ball in 1977 (despite not being a student there, I wangled tickets just to see them) and Johnny was the quiet, modest guy off stage, but his personality came to life when he picked up his Les Paul. I guess he'll always be known for one of the greatest hooks (if not THE greatest hook) in rock, the intro to Dearg Doom. Whilst all the other members of Horslips went on to other successful careers, Johnny never left the music scene, playing with Pat Travers (ex Miami Showband) in the Johnny Fean band. RIP Johnny. Your music lives on as a tribute to your life.

Very sad news, as I heard through the grapevine that he had been ill for a while with no specifics. Aside from establishing the sub genre known as celtic rock with Horslips, he was a truly warm and decent man. He will be missed by all those who knew him. RIP Johnny.

This is really sad. I love Horslips, and Johnny Fean's guitar playing was an essential part of their unique sound. May he rest in peace.

A sadly underrated guitarist. The Book of Invasions is one of my favorite albums of all time. Condolences go out to his family, friends, and other fans.

I have been away and completely missed this. Johnny was part of my teenage life; the youngest of the magnificent Horslips and the first to go. Oh Johnny, so talented and that perfect voice along with being an icon amongst a few Irish rock guitarists. I am so sad hearing this news. I'll have a Guinness and a tear tonight for the one-in-a-million Johnny Fean. You had no peer. I am devastated.
