Some seem to think that the early 1980's were awful years for prog, but think it's packed with great albums. As someone who also love synthpop, new wave and all that stuff - it's an exceptional period for music in general. For me this poll is just as packed with classics as any year in the 1970's. Well, almost.

I know I post a lot of RYM* this and RYM that. But while PA has by far my preferred forum for music discussion, I find RYM superior in almost every other aspect. Such as:

-Album genres instead of one genre to represent a band or an artist's whole career is obviously more useful, correct and informative.
-Their algorithms seem to better reflect an albums actual (relative) populariy.
-I like to rate using half stars (which basically is a 1-10 ratingsystem)
-and that everyone's opinion while rating or reviewing is worth the exact same
-Their charts are easier to make use of and appear to make more logical sense...
-Plus I just seem to find an "all music" site's tastes in prog, more agreeable than the tastes in prog on a progsite.
-
Btw: Univers Zero - Ceux Du Dehors is listed as a 1982 album on RYM (where it would be fifth in a similar chart/list for that year). Appearently the record was finished in January 1981, but not actually released until the 30th of January the year after.

I’m with you on the utility and worth of RYM. This is the only forum where I post, and really I am at PA for the forum.   I use their charts frequently. I have discovered much excellent music through it and it does end up seeming to align much more with my tastes. I find that people there commonly seem to focus more on art music, experimental, innovative and truly progressive albums than here with its strong melodic prog rock base (like Neo Prog is much more popular here). And there is much that I love that isn’t Prog.

Lots I love from the list, and I would post all my favourites were I not having such difficulty typing on this phone. Today I do go with This Heat over traditional faves such as Eskaton, Dun, Kultivator, Art Zoyd, Kraftwerk, The Residents, Eider Stellaire, Art Bears and more. Maybe because my region has been experiencing an early heat wave and I’m waiting in a baking hot car right now, This Heat seems very apt to my situation and global warming generally. Luckily it’s three, so I also am voting for Eskaton and Dun.

Voted for five:
Rush
Metheny/Mays
Kultivator
Eider Stellaire
Dun although I probably should have voted Eskaton there.
Could have voted ten and I love the 80's especially 1980 one of my all time favourite years for music. And the Avant and Zeuhl alone make the 80's very valuable.

Discipline and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts are the two outstanding ones, but more are very very good, like This Heat, Kraftwerk, Eskaton, Eros, Eloy, Art Zoyd, Art Bears.  I also miss Nude.

I don't miss Camel's Nude, I feel like Camel gets attention overkill often here despite me liking Camel and loving The Snow Goose in particular.

I'm not at all surprised that Camel's Nude doesn't make this top RYM 25. I haven't looked through the chart much. It's got a 3.44 / 5.0 from 1,478 ratings and is ranked (for all albums despite genre) #312 for 1981 which is not bad. At Pa it is only at number 30 here CLICK, and as I said, Prog Archives people are much favourable to more melodic progressive rock albums (favouring Symph and Neo-Prog here much more than there). To compare that Residents in number 25 in the poll, that has a 3.56 / 5.0 from 1,177 ratings and is ranked #166 for 1981. So actually that has fewer ratings but a rather higher average. At PA Mark of the Mole doesn't even factor into the top 250 for the year. That said, Camel is pretty popular at both sites. I like Nude, but I would take most of these over that.

Definitely 'Moving Pictures'. 'Mark of the Mole' is a pretty interesting album, but I gotta give it to Rush.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays, King Crimson. Could vote for a few others, but I kept it at three.

Well, I think Nude is a very good album, so I was just wondering why it was missing. Big smile

"Attention overkill"?! I wouldn't say so. They also get a bit  of backlash (from time to time), there have always been users that dislike them for some reason.

Neo-prog favorable?! LOL It's one of the least beloved subgenres here on PA, along with progressive metal.

Similar issue as with Ceux du dehors. It was recorded in February 1980 (and I would guess 1980 is printed on the cover) but according to RYM and Wikipedia not actually relased until 16 February 1981.

I quite like Nude too (a nice 7/10 album for me) but as Logan says, it wouldn't even have featured if this was based on PA's own 1981 chart. It's simply missing because it's nowhere near the top 25. I think it's always been considered a little lightweight, even among Camel fans (but a step up from I Can See Your House From Here).

Well, you got to compare. And compared to other sites, PA are much more favorable to both Neo-and Progmetal than just about anywhere else. Even if you feel that Neo gets little love here, they get it far less at RYM. In general Neo doesn't seem to speak to many people outside those who are already into the most melodic "pop-prog" of the 1970's. Infact the "weirdo-bands" that very few thinks higly of on PA, fare much, much better. RYM favors The Residents over IQ (the band:) by quite some distance, but Ever by the latter band is still second on RYM's all time top Neo Prog-albums (with an album that's only ranked at an all time 4 800 overall, more than 3 500 spots behind The Residents Not Available).

I'm comparing the charts of RYM and PA. This site's charts do tend to be more Neo-Prog favorable than RYM's. Both Neo-prog and Prog Metal are quite polarising here (so is a lot of RIO and Zeuhl actually) but forms of more melodic prog, Neo-Prog, and symphonic prog fare better here than at rateyourmusic from my extensive viewing of the charts of both sites (Camel actually does very well at both sites for the more classic albums). Neo-Prog, especially IQ in modern days do do well in the PA charts. Take for example IQ's Road of Bones. That is the number one album of 2014 at PA with a 4.24 rating and 1372 ratings. Swans To Be Kind is the number one album (of any genre) at RYM for 2014 with 4.03 and 25,293 ratings. The Road of Bones there has 3.57 with 808 ratings and isn't in the top 100 of its year.
.
In 1983, Marillion's Script for a Jester's Tear is the number two album at PA.

While Neo-Prog has many detractors, it has had large numbers of fans rating albums at PA, and even in the forum I think Neo-Prog gets a lot of love.

As for Camel detractors, Micky comes to mind. I have not thought of it as a particularly divisive band. Most I have known here like some Camel albums and not others. To some Camel is quite bland often. Camel's popularity declines amongst many following Moonmadness. I like Nude butt it's not top notch Camel for me by quite some margin. The Single Factor is considered a particularly poor album (I rather like in a strange way). And if Camel did get lots of backlash, that would mean more attention.

And Camel is so popular at PA that if I do a Mirage album topic, more people are likely to expect Camel's Mirage than the wonderful Mirage by Klaus Schulze. :p ;) I did poll with those and other Mirages in the titles albums. Camel was not surprisingly the more popular choice.
