    Posted: September 23 2023 at 13:10
I did a poll yesterday where I compiled 12 albums in the Prog Archives chart and 12 albums in the Rate Your Music chart from 2014 until yesterday. I only included albums from both charts that are included in Prog Archives. Additionally, I set it to must have at least 625 ratings at the site's chart from which it comes. This number of ratings stipulation actually limited the number of albums in PA's chart to 12 albums.

For this 2002 until 2013 list, I have set it up the same way, but there are many more ratings for the period at PA. I think this shows a very significant decline in the PA user-base, sadly, as opposed to a decline in Prog itself (I feel that music under the Prog umbrella/ progressive music has never been better).   Only three albums with over a thousand ratings came up for the "2014 until now" poll, but there are 41 albums with over 1000 ratings for the 2002-2013 period at PA.

Here are the hypertext linked charts: PA (CLICK) & RYM (CLICK)

The first 12 listed in this poll are from PA's chart (from Wilson to Wilson), the second 12 are taken from RYM's chart (from Radiohead to Mastodon).

Multiple votes are allowed. Vote for up to five albums, but please no more than one album per act.

Here are the chart stats at PA and RYM for the albums:

Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (and Other Stories) (2013)
PA rating 4.30 | 2318 ratings
RYM rating 3.69, 6,973 ratings, 123 reviews

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (2007)
PA rating 4.28 | 2791 ratings
RYM rating 3.81, 10,593 ratings, 279 reviews

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia (2002)
PA rating 4.26 | 2740 ratings
RYM rating 3.80, 13,391 ratings, 263 reviews

Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2005)
PA rating 4.26 | 1752 ratings
RYM rating 3.92, 11,482 ratings, 224 reviews

Änglagĺrd - Viljans Öga (2012)
PA rating 4.26 | 1164 ratings
RYM rating 3.63, 861 ratings, 24 reviews

Magma - K.A (Köhntarkösz Anteria) (2004)
PA rating 4.26 | 753 ratings
RYM rating 3.84, 2434 ratings, 36 reviews

Riverside - Second Life Syndrome (2005)
PA rating 4.24 | 1849 ratings
RYM rating 3.73, 3,414 ratings, 67 reviews

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane (2002)
PA rating 4.24 | 1273 ratings
RYM rating 3.74, 3604 ratings, 86 reviews

Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition (2009)
PA rating 4.22 | 1410 ratings
RYM rating 3.69, 2,515 ratings, 70 reviews

Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon (2007)
PA rating 4.23 | 1063 ratings
RYM rating 3.68, 880 ratings, 24 reviews

Big Big Train - English Electric (Part One) (2012)
PA rating 4.22 | 1124 ratings
RYM rating 3.66, 626 ratings, 24 reviews

Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning (2011)
PA rating 4.20 | 1898 ratings
RYM rating 3.64, 3638 ratings, 80 reviews

--------------------

Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007)
PA rating 3.83 | 628 ratings
RYM rating 4.28, 67,916 ratings, 856 reviews

Swans - The Seer (2012)
PA rating 3.95 | 193 ratings
RYM rating 3.97, 20,680 ratings, 292 reviews

Coil - The Age of Naples (2005)
PA rating 3.74 | 28 ratings
RYM rating 3.94, 14,032 ratings, 125 reviews

Sigur Rós - ( ) (2002)
PA rating 3.98 | 385 ratings
RYM rating 3.91 18,662 ratings, 327 reviews

Mastodon - Crack the Skye (2009)
PA rating 4.15 | 699 ratings
RYM rating 3.90, 13,193 ratings, 266 reviews

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (2005)
PA rating 4.09 | 248 ratings
RYM rating 3.90, 11,655 ratings, 131 reviews

Shibusashirazu - Shibuboshi (2004)
PA rating 4.00 | 3 ratings
RYM rating 3.95, 2,480 ratings, 16 reviews

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain (2006)
PA rating 3.91 | 251 ratings
RYM rating 3.90, 11,328 ratings, 172 reviews

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (2005)
PA rating 4.07 | 994 ratings
RYM rating 3.87, 15,364 ratings, 342 reviews

Tim Hecker - Virgins (2013)
PA rating 2.00 | 16 ratings
RYM rating 3.88, 12,436 ratings, 86 reviews

Isis - Panopticon (2004)
PA rating 4.13 | 281 ratings
RYM rating 3.88, 11,771 ratings, 166 reviews

Mastodon - Leviathan (2004)
PA rating 3.91 | 403 ratings
RYM rating 3.86, 14,649 ratings, 190 reviews

Note that the fifth for RYM in the chart of acts included in PA's database is Opeth's Ghost Reveries, but it was already in the PA list (in fourth position) so I did not list it twice.

There is a huge discrepancy in both the number of ratings and the average rating for Tim Hecker's Virgin when comparing RYM and PA (it only has one review at PA, which is one star, from someone who I share many similar tastes with and I will be interested to hear it for myself). That Shibusashirazu got very little attention at PA (very good album, I think). Quite surprised that the Sigur Rós is not more rated at PA. I know Post-Rock is not the most popular here, but that is now considered to be such a classic album. Another notable amongst many in comparing the RYM and PA charts is that Coil's The Age of Naples has 28 ratings at PA and over 14,000 ratings at RYM. Coil was a later add to PA and that album came out in 2005 so it would not have got attention at the time. Also, it is not trad. Prog, and I do believe that more traditionally Prog music has been favoured at PA (I have thought of the tastes here commonly being on the quite conservative side).

My choices are:

Swans - The Seer
Coil - The Age of Naples
Shibusashirazu - Shibuboshi
Sigur Rós - ( )
Magma - K.A (Kohntarkosz Anteria)

Love Radiohead, but it has just been quite a few years since I last listened to In Rainbows (even if it deserves my vote)

In due order:
Big Big Train - English Electric (Part One)
Magma - K.A
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

(I withhold a vote for The Raven: same artist, different moniker)

Again, only the albums at the top of the list appeal, but Second Life Syndrome stands out by a mile.

My three favourites here are The Seer, (), and In Absentia. Some further good albums are the ones by Coil, Magma, Radiohead, Mars Volta, but as I can't boil down these four to two, I leave it at three votes.
