Hello all! - my band Lifting Line Theory has it's first official release "Wonder."  It is a collection of four original old school prog rock songs.  It is available on Spotify, I Heart Radio, etc (search for Lifting Line Theory, Wonder) or through Band Camp at:  https://liftinglinetheory.bandcamp.com/album/wonder   For any that give it a listen - thank you very much!

A brief bio:  Okay – “long story short” time.  My name is Chris. I’m just a guy from New Jersey (living in South Carolina at the moment).  I’m an aerodynamic engineer and session musician.  I play anything with strings or that you have to hit.  If you have to blow into it – I’m useless, unless you need to clear out some stray animals.

My partner in all of this is a classically trained pianist and a very close personal friend of mine.  We wrote the material on the album (and a LOT more as well) over a couple of years several decades ago.  We had grand plans but a drunk driver took her life.  Starting from our demos, I spent a LONG time finishing the material we wrote.  I played everything you hear, and recorded, mixed, and mastered it all.

This album is part 1 of that effort.  If this first collection gets even a little traction (at least enough to pay for itself) I plan to release the rest of the material over the next few years (basically each time I finish enough to make an “album” - roughly 7-12 months).  At the request of her family, my friend will remain anonymous (for now at least).  If this project gets enough traction I will put together a live band version (there are a number of local musicians I have worked with that I have in mind for this).

I apologize for the scant info in the original post.  I wanted the focus to be on the music not the drama of the back story (but - I understand the need for some info).  I am also very new to this.  I have never been one to run things in the projects I have been involved in (bands, businesses, social media accounts in the bands I'm in, gigs, etc).  I'm a creative guy not a business guy!  so - I am admittedly quite inept at this!  :)  Please be patient with me as I learn this new role.

Lastly - thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this project and to any who give it a listen.

^ It's an excellent album indeed, Chris, and I've no doubt whatsoever that we can find a place for you on Progarchives. However, I'm not sure after just one listen which sub genre would be the most appropriate.

The other thing is, I couldn't find any information about your project on the web from a quick search, and if you read the artist submission procedure pinned at the top of this forum you'll see that our teams usually insist on a biography and an artist photo before they will initiate an evaluation.

I'm not too concerned myself about that procedure being strictly adhered to if the music is definitely prog and I can find the necessary information on line to write a reasonable biography of my own for an artist, but in your case, at the moment I can't find anything.

So, you could really help us get this suggestion moving for you by giving as a bit of history about your project (it seems to be just you and your partner who were involved in the creation of the current album), and a photo we could use on your eventual page.

If you could also edit your topic title to include a suggested sub genre, that would help the leader of the appropriate team to spot the suggestion and move it to the next stage, though I can always let them know myself once we have established which might be the most appropriate sub for your music.

Thanks in anticipation for your help with this. Smile

Got it. Will get that info to you as soon as I can. We're equally not sure what genre to claim. We've been called symphonic prog by several so... we'll go with that. I'll post up a bio and band history this evening or tomorrow. My apologies for the scant information. That will be corrected :)

^ Thanks for the additional information, Chris. Really sorry to hear about what happened to your partner in the project, and I hope the person who was responsible for the tragedy was dealt with appropriately by the authorities. I'll have another listen to the album right now to see if I can decide on the most suitable sub genre, and then ask one of the evaluation teams to start the ball rolling (most likely the Symphonic Team).

Edit: Louis has already picked the suggestion up and taken it to his team (see below). The Symphonic Team is usually one of the quickest to complete its evaluations, and also its additions, but you can check up on how things are going in the meantime by visiting the Awesome Prog link that Mike gave you a couple of posts above and clicking on the PA tab.

Edit 2: Are you the same Chris Carroll that played (or plays) guitar in the bands Darwin's Radio, The Derrick Dorsey Band and Soul Ripple?

Listen to this fine album and it seems to fit under modern symphonic prog with a slight heavy twist. I will send this to the team.

Thank you all for everything (reviewing the album, separate page, patience with me).  Hugely appreciated.  Yes I am the very same Chris Carroll.  And the "Darwin's Radio" I played in locally in South Carolina is not THAT Darwin's Radio (obviously).  It was just a very short lived local cover project (- I really need to pull down or edit that Facebook page...).  To any who listened to the album thank you very much!  You would never know from my meager online presence that I am a prog guy.  No real market for it here in SC (which is sad).  But my main love is Prog.  I always have and always will play a HUGE rage of genre/styles (whether on guitar, drums, bass, keys, etc) but I will always love prog more than the rest.  Again - thank you very much.

Wow, Wonder is an absolutely incredible song, the chords remind me a lot of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

The next step, if you haven't already set the wheels in motion, is to submit some music to selected prog radio stations and podcasts so that the album receives some airplay, which would obviously help get the word out. I noticed that you only have 2 'likes' and 4 followers on Facebook at present. That would soon change if people got to hear some samples from this excellent album.

I'm a prog rock all-in-one musician/composer myself, so excuse my geeky question. Did you use an electronic drum kit or did you program the drum parts for the album?

No worries on getting into geeky questions - I'm all for it and more than willing to provide a geeky answer  :)  No programing anywhere on the album (for anything).  And it is not an electric kit - but not purely acoustic either.  The drums are the weird one on all of this.  Long story short again - drums was my first instrument.  But - I have some physical limitations now when it comes to playing drums.  Too long on a kit and my hands go completely numb.  So - it's all played on a real kit - but in little bits and pieces.  Then it's all stitched together and triggered (and mixed in with the real kit - mostly the room mic) to even it all out (in an attempt to make it sound like a single performance).  Lots of editing involved.  There are simpler ways to do it (programming it all) but I'm stubborn and wanted all the instruments to be actually physically played. It's not as natural sounding as I would have preferred but - it works well enough (I think).  I started working on this MANY years ago and - to avoid having to constantly rework things and to have a somewhat unified sonic landscape I didn't upgrade gear along the way.  So - triggers are old, samples triggered are old, plug ins are old, etc.

Ah. So I'm not the only one that does this. A while ago I recorded pseudo-live drums for a song, piecemeal style, because of my poor drumming skills and more importantly, not to bother my next door neighbors.
