Well, "new" is a relative term. I've lurked on here for many years and visit regularly, and I once had an account many years ago that I think probably got deleted for inactivity (fair and no loss to anyone). I had some ideas for reviews recently and so decided to re-register. We'll see how active I manage to be this time - life is very full.
I was born a little late for the classic era - my teen tastes were heavily impacted by 80s synth things, and one thread that connected me later to prog was a big interest in ambient and analog synth music, which helped me gain a leaning to longer and more patience-demanding musical forms. Post-rock was another inroad. Then jazz. Also some friendships with folk knowledgeable about prog, leading to the discovery that rock music does not have to be simplistic. I listen to a lot of different kinds of music and try to explore new things (and genres) regularly. Between exploring, some things I return to regularly that are part of the landscape here would include, in no particular order, Transatlantic, Pineapple Thief, Camel, Porcupine Tree/Wilson stuff, Spock's Beard/Morse-related stuff, some (early) bits of Genesis and Yes, a few bits of King Crimson, Agusa, Riverside, Marillion, Unitopia, O.S.I./Chroma Key, some bits of Dream Theater and Tool, some bits of The Flower Kings, Barock Project, IQ, Giantsky, Lazuli, Stephan Thelen, Ozric Tentacles, anything DiN-related, Oöphoi, Emeralds, ...where to stop? I keep thinking that one day I might figure out the appeal of Rush and ELP, but the day has not yet come :-). I most instinctively hang out in the Symphonic, Neo-, and Electronic corners, but in principle I am interested in all of it (and not very interested in defining the boundary). As soon as I can figure out how to get the site to let me log in (I have a post on the bugs thread, which was why I thought I should introduce myself here) I'll post a couple of reviews and see where that takes me. Thanks to everyone who has sustained all of this - I have learned a lot from innumerable reviews and have regularly found new things to listen to here. |
