Topic: songs that really makes your heart ache Posted: November 18 2005 at 15:12 |
I whole heartedly agree with Floyd's Us & Them............ when I read the posts mentioning this track al the hair on my arms stood up!
It's a beautiful, beautiful track, and it certainly stirs my tear ducts!
The other track that makes me break down and cry buckets it Queen- Who wants to live Forever

Genesis:
Firth of Firth - one of the most moving guitar solo's Ive ever heard...
Supper's Ready - Great Finale...
The Musical Box - Even greater finale, in my opinion...
Pink Floyd:
Us and Them - Great Sax solo...
Shine on you crazy diamond - Wowie!
Liquid Tension Experiment:
Kindred Spirits - love it :}

For me Its Pink Floyd's Us and Them, Coheed and Cambria's Wake up, Jane Semour from the 6 wives of Henry VIII by Rick Wakeman, Lynard Skynard's Tuesdays gone, Free's Mourning sad morning, Queen's these were the days of our lives, InMe's You'l get there, Safe in your room and (may as well) kiss me, Fleetwood Mac's Albatrose.
All for different reasons that span from just beautifully written to reminding me of the old days to there when im feeling down and need abit of a cry (in private of course coz as the cure say 'boys don't cry')

From a couple of overlooked groups - both Renaissance and Iona have so many of those sorts of moments that it will be difficult to catalogue them all.
Renaissance in particular makes music which is just too beautiful - with the piano and Annie Haslam's voice:
The Story Of Scheherezade
Kolynda - The Magical Isle
Forever Changing
Day Of The Dreamer
Ashes Are Burning
Running Hard
Ocean Gypsy
Iona's appeal is unique as they tend not to be so in your face, and their music has a spiritual, otherworldly quality to it.
Irish Day
Treasure
Castlerigg
Woven Cord
Encircling
Iona's guitarist, Dave Bainbridge, released an album last year, the last track of which, Star-Filled Skies, is
a mini-suite which is good enough on its own, but when you listen to it
with the entire album as prologue, it is good enough to unbody you.

Yes, it evoked the same reaction in me too

VdGG - House With No Door, Lost, Refugees, plus the sax solo by Jaxon
in My Room (Waiting for Wonderland), plus another sax solo in Man-Erg.
Moody Blues - Question
Kinks - All The Day and All Of The Night
Fleetwood Mac - Man Of The World (the worst of the lot, I can't listen to it very often)
Cranberries - Zombie
Johnny Cash - all of his final album, it's so depressing, but fantastic at the same time, certainly a killer of conversations
King Crimson - Epitaph
Queen - The Show Must Go On (another one I can't listen too)
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts (depressing as anything, not a song I want to hear too often)
Peter Hammill - A Louse Is Not A Home
Led Zeppelin - Whola Lotta Love (don't ask why, it just does..., more sentimental than depressing, reminds me of a dear friend)
Guns 'n Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine (again, more sentimental, it's a shared song with my best mate and it reminds me of her)
I have a feeling I've missed something obvious off my list...
Edit: I was right, I missed out two: Duster Bennett - Jumping At
Shadows (also covered by Fleetwood Mac) and Keef Hartley Band - Born To
Die

How about Marillion's Out of this World from Afriad of Sunlight. That
solo section in the middle is amazing, as well as everything that
proceeds. Also The Invisible Man has many emotionally charged moments,
especially if you watch the live performance on their Marbles live DVD.
Rothery is capable of many emotional solos. Great guitarist.
Lifeson's solos in Freewill, Emotion Detector, Ghost of a Chance...
many others. Rush's Losing It(great lyrics), Everyday Glory... Rush
have too many for me.
Yes also has many, Awaken - that rising crescendo - beautiful, unlike anything I;ve heard.
Yes - Most of their Talk album. This was a great album, Rabin really
proved himself with this one. I think Rabin haters should really give
this one another listen, it is great.
The Tea Party, a great Canadian borderline progressive band, has many
as well... Psychopomp, Babylon, These Living Arms, Seven Circles...
Many others...

Supper's ready, the most. So much emotion in it... And moods change with every part.
Also, most of PoS's Remedy Lane. What an album.
I'll think of more.

The Scooby Doo theme song; Caravan-The Dog, The Dog He's At It Again (when Pye sings "legs and thighs hellos and goodbyes it's all there" I shed a tear everytime).
However, the two winners for this category (and seriously this time by the way) are both Genesis songs and are both from the same sessions...Banks' Evidence of Autumn and Rutherford's Open Door. Very sad songs both. Others are APP's Old and Wise, Tony Banks' Somebody Else's Dream, Queen's Good Company is one of the bounciest and happiest sounding sad song I've ever heard. There are more I'm sure but these are the ones I can think of.

In the progressive aspect:
VDGG - Refugees, House With No Door, Still Life, Pilgrims, Lost, Childlike Faith In Childhood's End (Peter Hammill knows how to touch the heart)
Marillion - Script For A Jester's Tear
Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street, Don't Give Up, Here Comes The Flood
Jethro Tull - The Chequered Flag, Home
King Crimson - Starless
Genesis - The Lamia, Entangled
Pink Floyd - High Hopes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Is There Anybody Out There?
Camel - Stationary Traveller (I think this song is one of the best instrumentals)
ELO - Ticket To The Moon (Wish its vocal part in the middle does not exist)
Kansas - Dust In The Wind

Wow, there sure are a lot of crybabys here. I've listened to music for 30 years and have heard hundreds of albums, and never once came across a song the makes my heart ache.
Can't say that that reality makes me cry either.

I am useless at this kind of listy thing........I always miss so many, and there is a lot out there that tugs on my heart strings............
a couple of things have made me weep recently, "For your journey" Pendragon- Believe, and "edge of the world" from the same album, both chew up my heart strings they are two really deep and heart felt songs..........
and seeing Fish on his recent "return to childhood" tour, I forgot how much Mylo makes me blub! infact looking around the crowd of 40something men in the crowd, it had the same effect on them too!

Some powerful examples in the category of Prog:
Starless (King Crimson)
Hairless Heart (Genesis)
A Louse Is Not a Home (Peter Hammill)
Ice (Camel)
Afterimage (Rush)
Hey You (Pink Floyd)
Some non-prog ones that are equally effective:
The River (Bruce Springsteen)
Mother (John Lennon)
The Winner Takes It All (Abba)
Kozmic Blues (Janis Joplin)
Magic (Nick Drake)
Hey You (Pink Floyd) couldn't decide which category to put this one in

f**k yea, man! I knew there had to be another one like me out there!
I am almost breaking tears at the end of Darkside of the Moon.
Brain Damage and Eclipse is the best ending to any album ever and it
jerks my tears every time I listen to it.
Camel - The Snow Goose
Van Der Graaf - Pioneers Over C. at the very end of H To He Who Am The Only One
Both are moving as hell, too.
