Topic: Something possibly new to you guys Posted: November 23 2005 at 13:50 |
Have you guys heard of Suede, aka London Suede (they had to change their name for a release in America to London Suede, so they wouldn't get sued)...
Their first 2 albums are the ones I like them for, they're very good.

My avatar is the vocalist of glam rock/brit pop band Suede (aka the London Suede in USA). They were once good before the guitarist left the band. Albums to hear: self titled debut and 'Dog Man Star.'

I haven't heard them. What would you compare them to (if anything)?

Their first album is just called Suede, and their second is Dog Man Star.

I'd compare them to David Bowie, combined with Pink Floyd. Not as progressive though, but they do have prog elements, and could someday be on this site.

Yeah Suede can be compared to Bowie I guess - good vocalist in Brett Anderson and great original guitarist Bernard Butler- good band but not great

Aw ... you got to be kidding Dr. Diper ... this may sound like a stunt
... but the wife's an old friend of one of the members ... and we've
got every damn little single in our collection ... to compound the
connection, I once interviewed Anderson by phone ...
I thought Dog Man Star was one of the best albums of the 90s, but
that the band took a nose dive soon after ... by the time of the 4th
album, I'd lost interest ...
Incidentally one funny thing about Suede ... aside from the second
album, the B-sides around the time of the first and second albums and
the EP Stay Together ... were stronger than almost every album, bar Dog
Man Star ...
As far as I know, the closest Suede ever got to prog ... was when the
band member in question bought me a Henry Cow and Hatfield And The
North ...
Seriously, I'd say that Asphalt World was the one and only time Suede
were remotely proggy ... apparently Butler once had a 19 minute version
of that song going!!!

Suede were ok. I saw them live once and they sounded very good. I went out and bought their album 'Coming Up' afterwards and thought it was awful to be honest.
Their earlier singles like 'Animal Nitrate' were quite good.

Their first album was a pretty good Bowie/Smiths hybrid (though as Blacksword points out Animal Nitrate is the only truly great track on it) and Dog Man Star had its moments as well, but they never really fulfilled their initial promise IMO.

A good band definitely. My favourite song is Heroine.
